Breuil-Cervinia, officially designated as Le Breuil since September 2023, is a frazione of the comune of Valtournenche, Italy, located at an altitude of 2,050 meters (6,730 feet) above sea level. This scenic alpine resort, situated at the base of the renowned Matterhorn peak, is a favored locale for winter and summer visitors. The village’s distinctive name is a combination of two separate words, each with its own historical and cultural importance.
The initial segment of the name, “Breuil,” derives from the French language and was the original designation of the site prior to the establishment of the tourist village. Originating from the Valdôtain dialect term “Breuill,” it denotes a wet meadow or an area distinguished by several streams. This appellation is prevalent not only in this area but also across the Aosta Valley, France, and Romandy, illustrating the region’s extensive linguistic past.
The second component, “Cervinia,” was included during the fascist regime’s Italianization of toponyms in the Aosta Valley. It explicitly alludes to the Matterhorn, referred to in Italian as Monte Cervino, the magnificent summit that dominates the terrain and is a hallmark of the region.
The geographical position of Breuil-Cervinia is exceptionally remarkable. The settlement, encircled by notable peaks such as the Jumeaux, the Château des Dames, the Furggen, and the Grandes Murailles, provides stunning panoramic vistas of the Alpine scenery. The Marmore brook divides the hamlet, enhancing its appeal and creating a natural separation within the population.
A notable feature of Breuil-Cervinia is its vast ski area, which it shares with the Swiss resort of Zermatt via the Plateau Rosa glacier. This linkage not only broadens the accessible territory for winter sports aficionados but also facilitates a distinctive cross-border skiing experience. The ski season in Breuil-Cervinia is notably prolonged, stretching beyond the winter months into the summer on the high-altitude Plateau Rosa glacier, located at an elevation of 3,500 meters (11,500 ft) above sea level.
The resort’s altitude, between 2,050 and 3,500 meters, guarantees superior snow quality over the whole season, establishing it as a dependable locale for skiers and snowboarders. The extensive ski area accommodates all proficiency levels, from novices to expert athletes, providing a variety of slopes and difficulties. When weather conditions allow, Breuil-Cervinia is linked to the Valtournenche ski resort by the Cime Bianche mountain pass, augmenting the territory accessible to winter sports aficionados.
Breuil-Cervinia’s significance in the realm of alpine skiing is firmly established. The resort premiered on the international competitive scene by hosting a Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup event during the 1977-1978 season. On December 10, 1977, the Cielo Alto slope hosted an exhilarating slalom competition, signifying a notable milestone in the resort’s history. The event saw French skier Perrine Pelen securing victory, succeeded by her fellow countrywoman Fabienne Serrat and Hanni Wenzel, who subsequently triumphed in both the overall and slalom standings for that season.
The resort’s participation in prestigious skiing events has progressed. Commencing with the 2022-2023 season, Breuil-Cervinia, in partnership with Zermatt, Switzerland, will introduce an innovative cross-border segment of the Alpine Ski World Cup. This groundbreaking event will include downhill and super-g races for both men and women, on a route that traverses Italian and Swiss countries. The authorized slope, known as Gran Becca (Matterhorn in Valdôtain dialect), starts from the Gobba di Rollin in Switzerland at an elevation of 3,899 meters, includes the Ventina slope in Italy, and terminates at the Cime Bianche Laghi – Plateau Rosa cable car station. This distinctive cross-border race not only highlights the resort’s premier amenities but also epitomizes the essence of international collaboration in the Alps.
In addition to professional contests, Breuil-Cervinia hosted a unique and remarkable event called Azzurrissimo. This distinctive skiing tournament took place on the 11-kilometer Ventina slope, comprising 100 gates and drawing a varied assortment of competitors, including ski clubs, sports centers, military sports organizations, celebrities, journalists, and amateur enthusiasts. The event’s ideology focused on an all-against-all ski battle, integrating many disciplines of alpine skiing into one thrilling contest. Azzurrissimo rapidly attained global acclaim, establishing collaborations with analogous events in Crans-Montana and Baqueira-Beret. The competition occurred yearly from 1987 to 1998, usually in early May, aligning with the conclusion of the racing season and several championships. This schedule facilitated the involvement of esteemed skiers and resulted in the prestigious accolade for the “fastest ski club in Italy.”
