Le Monêtier-les-Bains is notably situated along the 45th parallel north. Historically, Le Monêtier-les-Bains served as the capital of the eponymous canton, encompassing the adjacent communes of La Salle-les-Alpes and Saint-Chaffrey. The right bank of the Guisane has its own aquatic marvels. An artificial lake within the Serre-Chevalier resort functions as a crucial water reservoir, sustaining the infrastructure and operations of this renowned skiing locale. The Arsine lakes, referred to as the white lakes, along with the Réou d’Arsine lakes, offer a breathtaking landscape of water, moraine, and meadows at altitudes ranging from 2,250 to 2,500 meters. The hamlet of Lautaret, situated at an elevation of 2,090 meters, exemplifies human settlement in harsh alpine environments. Lauzet, located at an elevation of 1,668 meters, delineates the boundary between the exterior and interior zones of the Alps, serving as a geological and cultural transition point. Additional significant hamlets are Boussardes, Casset, Guibertes, Freyssinet, and Serre-Barbin, all situated at altitudes between 1,440 and 1,660 meters. The local weather station records an average annual temperature of 6.7°C and an average annual precipitation of 860.7mm. The thermal baths flourished from 1715 to the late 19th century, drawing tourists from distant locations in pursuit of the medicinal advantages of the mineral-laden waters. Despite the loss in popularity of the baths during the 20th century, a resurgence started in 1999 with the inauguration of the new thermal bath complex, Les Grands Bains. The local infrastructure comprises seven chairlifts and four drag lifts, with the apex skiing elevation being an astonishing 2,760 meters above sea level. The village’s position at Col du Lautaret has established it as a consistent highlight in the Tour de France, a premier event in the cycling calendar. The Tour has traversed Le Monêtier-les-Bains several times in recent decades, with significant occurrences in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2008. The 2011 Tour de France solidified the commune’s significance in the event, as cyclists traversed within around 20 kilometers of the finish line on the 18th stage.
