Avignon, a city rich in history and cultural importance, is located in southern France as the capital of the Vaucluse department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region. This historical city is ideally located on the left bank of the Rhône River, with a population of 93,671 as of 2017, including over 16,000 people in the old town center surrounded by its renowned medieval walls. Avignon’s impact reaches much beyond its local confines, ranking as the 35th-largest metropolitan region in France with a population of 337,039 as of 2020, and the 13th-largest urban unit, with 459,533 residents. The city’s urban landscape has experienced significant growth, establishing itself as the fastest-growing urban region in France from 1999 to 2010, with a notable 76% rise in people and a 136% expansion in area. The expansion is also evident in the Communauté d’agglomération du Grand Avignon, a cooperative entity consisting of 16 municipalities, which jointly accommodated 197,102 inhabitants in 2022.
Avignon’s history is intricately linked to papal dominance and religious importance. Between 1309 and 1377, under the Avignon Papacy, the city was the seat of seven consecutive popes, signifying a crucial period in its history and that of the Catholic Church. The era of papal authority was further reinforced in 1348 when Pope Clement VI obtained the town from Joanna I of Naples, therefore establishing Avignon as a papal state. The city was under papal administration for more than four centuries until the upheaval of the French Revolution in 1791 resulted in its annexation by France. The prolonged era of religious governance has profoundly influenced Avignon’s character, bestowing upon it the evocative title “La Cité des Papes” (The City-State of Popes).
The architectural heritage of Avignon’s papal history is epitomized by the Palais des Papes, an imposing Gothic palace that signifies the authority and affluence of the medieval pope. This monumental edifice, together with the city’s church and the renowned Pont d’Avignon, constitutes the nucleus of Avignon’s historic center, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995. This esteemed title recognizes both the remarkable architectural significance of these buildings and their substantial historical relevance during the 14th and 15th centuries, a time when Avignon emerged as a hub of European politics and culture.
The Pont d’Avignon, or Pont Saint-Bénézet, is perhaps one of the city’s most iconic features. This medieval bridge, celebrated in the renowned French children’s song “Sur le Pont d’Avignon,” still exists as a scenic ruin, retaining just four of its original 22 arches. Although unfinished, the bridge remains an alluring attraction, embodying Avignon’s lasting allure and historical importance.
The cultural life of Avignon transcends its architectural wonders. The city has positioned itself as a prominent hub for the arts, particularly shown by the yearly Festival d’Avignon. Inaugurated in 1947 by Jean Vilar, this festival has evolved into one of the largest and most esteemed events in the performing arts globally. Every summer, the festival converts Avignon into a dynamic platform, drawing artists and audiences from across the world. The festival’s varied program, including theater, dance, music, and visual arts, highlights innovative acts while employing the city’s ancient sites as striking backgrounds, resulting in a distinctive blend of modern art and medieval architecture.
Avignon’s rich history and cultural attractions attract around four million tourists each year. The Palais des Papes serves as the city’s major attraction, with 572,972 paying visitors in 2011 alone. The Festival d’Avignon enhances these figures, with the main festival drawing 135,800 participants in 2012. The surge in tourists has prompted the establishment of a comprehensive tourism infrastructure, with various lodgings, dining options, and guided excursions that address a wide array of interests and financial capacities.
In recent years, Avignon has promoted river tourism, using its scenic position along the Rhône. Following the inception of riverboat hotels in 1994, the city’s waterfront has transformed into a vibrant center of activity. As of 2011, a fleet of 21 riverboat hotel vessels, comprising six specialized sightseeing boats, routinely stop along the Oulle walkways, providing guests with distinctive views of the city from the water. A complimentary shuttle boat service links Avignon to the Île de la Barthelasse, improving access to the river and its vicinity, while a harbor master supervises the growing river traffic, assuring safety and operational efficiency.
The city’s dedication to preserving its visual attractiveness and environmental integrity has been recognized. Avignon has received one flower from the National Council of Towns and Villages in Bloom, acknowledging its commitment to urban beautification and the management of green spaces. This distinction reflects the city’s commitment to conserving its natural heritage in conjunction with its historical monuments, fostering a harmonious integration of constructed and natural habitats that improves the quality of life for inhabitants and the experience for tourists.
