Prolom Banja

Prolom, sometimes known as Prolom Banja, is a peaceful spa town in southern Serbia inside the municipality of Kuršumlija. Nestled behind the Radan and Sokolovica mountains, this retreat lies 550 to 670 meters above sea level. The 131 people living in Prolom, according to the 2011 census, create a peaceful setting for anyone looking for respite from metropolitan noise.

Prolom’s appeal as a health and wellness destination is much enhanced by its geographic position. Located 23.1 kilometers southeast of Kuršumlija and 85 kilometers from Niš, Prolom provides simple access while yet maintaining a feeling of privacy. Signifying a turning point in the history of the spa, the company Planinka from Kuršumlija took over management of guest lodging and treatments in 1961.

The infrastructure of Prolom shows its growing importance. Originally offering 28 beds, Hotel Radan, the basic lodging of the resort, was opened in 1968. Later years saw significant hotel growth, including an addition of 128 beds in 1976. A major breakthrough came in 1982 when geoexploratory drilling generated 11 liters of therapeutic water per second at 29 degrees Celsius. This revelation helped further growth, which resulted in the 1989 building of a second annex. The extension added swimming pool amenities and a treatment block to increase the hotel’s capacity—270 beds.

One noteworthy aspect of Prolom’s treatment approach is the use of medicinal mud. For the treatment of rheumatic and dermatological diseases, guests historically used mud from nearby therapeutic springs. The technique has changed; today, therapeutic mud is carefully created by mixing healing water with dirt derived from nearby Pupavci thermal spring. Used in mud baths, this improved mud has shown effectiveness treating skin diseases, vascular problems, rheumatic symptoms, and particular prostate diseases.

One interesting change in the history of the spa is the marketing of Prolom water. Water has been bottled for home and foreign markets since 1989. The building of a new water plant in 2005 greatly raised output capacity. The water comes from a depth of 220 meters and is bottled in PET packaging free of any physical or chemical treatments, therefore preserving its natural qualities.

One can classify prolom water as a useful balneological source. Along with trace levels of fluorine, the composition is defined by nitrogen, high alkalinity, low mineralization, sodium hydrocarbonate, and silicic acid. The features have been accepted in balneology and improve therapeutic efficacy.
