Big White Ski Resort is located in the Southern Interior of British Columbia, 56 kilometers southeast of Kelowna. This prominent winter sports location is situated in the Okanagan Highland, an elevated area linking the Monashee Mountains and the Okanagan Valley. After Whistler-Blackcomb, Sun Peaks, and Silver Star, Big White ranks fourth among the ski resorts in British Columbia. Its quality in the skiing scene was acknowledged when Snowpak ranked it as Canada’s third-best ski resort in 2019.
Standing as the tallest mountain in the Okanagan Highland, Big White Mountain is the main attraction of the resort. Rising 2,319 meters (7,608 feet), the peak has a steep plunge of 777 meters (2,549 feet). Skiing and snowboarding find ideal conditions here from topography. The mountain’s 750-centimeter (300-inch) average yearly snowfall helps to provide a longer ski season. The resort has 1,119 hectares (2,656 acres) of skiable terrain.
Comprising 15 hectares (38 acres), the resort has the biggest night skiing area in Western Canada. This facility lets guests carry on their nighttime skiing under artificial lighting.
Visitors center their activities at the foot of the mountain on a core settlement formally identified as a designated area by Statistics Canada. At 1,755 meters (5,758 feet), this community has retail stores and lodging, therefore acting as a handy base for alpine adventure.
Big White’s landscape consists of 27 unidentified trails and 119 officially marked paths. These paths range in difficulty: 18% for beginners, 56% for intermediates, 22% for expert skiers, and 6% for those looking for really difficult tasks. Between runs, mostly approved, the woodland sections provide further ground for discovery.
Modern technology is included into Big White’s lift system to optimize efficiency. Operating one 8-passenger high-speed gondola, one 6-passenger high-speed chair (added in the 2006/07 season), four 4-passenger high-speed chairs, two 4-passenger fixed-grip chairs, and three 2-passenger chairs—including the Telus park chairlift—the resort runs Added in the 2015–2016 season are a T-bar, children’s and adult’s magic carpets, and a tubing carpet lift. These lifts taken together have the ability to move 28,000 people hourly upwards.
Big White has fitted radio-frequency identification (RFID) gate technology across all feeder lifts in line with technical developments. This system guarantees legitimate lift tickets and passes, therefore optimizing operational effectiveness and passenger pleasure.
