Revelstoke, located in southeastern British Columbia, Canada, has a population of 8,275 according to the 2021 census. Situated 641 kilometers east of Vancouver and 415 kilometers west of Calgary, Alberta, the community has a strategic location on the banks of the Columbia River, just south of the Revelstoke Dam and close to its confluence with the Illecillewaet River.
The surrounds of the city include some of Canada’s most breathtaking natural settings. Accessible from Rogers Pass, a vital passage for the Trans-Canada Highway and the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Selkirk Mountains and Glacier National Park are to the east. While to the west Eagle Pass divides the Monashee Mountains, leading to Shuswap Lake, southward the Columbia River runs via the Arrow Lakes and Mount Begbie into the Kootenays.
The founding of Revelstoke matched the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in the 1880s. Originally called Farwell, the hamlet was also nicknamed as the “Second Crossing” to distinguish it apart from the CPR’s initial Columbia River crossing at Donald after a local landowner and surveyor. In respect of Lord Revelstoke, head of Baring Brothers & Co., a UK investment firm, the CPR later changed its name to Revelstoke. Purchasing the unsold bonds of the CPR helped this institution, in association with Glyn, Mills & Co., significantly contribute in 1885 to prevent financial collapse and guarantee the railway’s completion. The city’s official acknowledgment came in 1986 when a post office was built.
Although mining first spurred the economic growth of Revelstoke, the building of the Trans-Canada Highway in 1962 greatly improved regional accessibility, therefore promoting the rise of tourism as the main economic agent. Right now, skiing is the most popular draw. Mount Revelstoke National Park provides more leisure activities, and the development of Revelstoke Mountain Resort on Mount MacKenzie, started in late 2005 and run since the 2007-2008 ski season, further confirms the city’s reputation as a top ski destination. Rich transportation legacy of the city is preserved in Revelstoke by a railway museum.
Black bears and grizzly bears find perfect home in Revelstoke. The city took aggressive steps in 1994 to handle human-wildlife relations by encircling the nearby trash dump with an electric fence, therefore stopping bear foraging. As displaced bears sought other food sources, this action unintentionally resulted in more bear activity within the settlement, destroying many as “nuisance bears.” This sad result led to the development of an educational campaign meant to preserve bears’ natural character while guaranteeing community safety.
The snowiest single winter recorded in Canada is in Revelstoke. Just beyond the town, Mt. Copeland had 2,447 cm of snow during the winter of 1971–72. 779 cm of snow were reported within the town proper, with accumulations several meters over the height of many roofs. This climate phenomena not only influences the way of living in the area but also makes Revelstoke more attractive for winter sports.
