RED Mountain Resort, located in the Monashee Mountains of southeastern British Columbia, represents the historical significance and contemporary relevance of skiing in North America. Originally built in Rossland, a former gold mining town in the West Kootenay area, this ancient ski slope dates back to the early 1900s with the founding of the Red Mountain Ski Club (RMSC). The heritage of the resort draws skiers all around.
RED Mountain Resort is on four magnificent mountains: Granite, Grey, Kirkup, and Red Mountains. This prime site gives amazing views and varied skiing opportunities. Providing difficult expert terrain, the resort mostly serves intermediate and expert-level skiers and riders. The resort offers thrilling descends from a base height of 1,185 meters (3,888 feet) above sea level and a vertical drop of 887 meters (2,910 ft).
The resort have 3,850 acres (15.6 km²) of skiable terrain and 119 designated routes. These lines are quickly serviced by six chairlifts, a T-bar, and a magic carpet, therefore guaranteeing easy slope access. The fourth peak, Mount Kirkup, provides in-bounds cat skiing for a minimal cost, therefore improving the skiing experience. With an average yearly snowfall of 750 cm (300 inches), the vast landscape offers the famed light, dry powder of the British Columbia Interior.
Accessibility is first at RED Mountain Resort. To provide simple access for foreign visitors, resort-owned shuttles link the region to surrounding airports in Trail and Castlegar. Further improving the resort’s reachability are major international airports in Spokane, Washington (2.5 hours away) and Kelowna, 3.5 hours away.
The history of the resort corresponds in richness with its snow-covered hills. Despite delays brought on by concerns about forest fire hazards, the RMSC created a new slalom slope for racing practice in summer 1958. At that time, the resort had only one chairlift—the Red Chair—installed in 1947 as the first in western Canada. The resort had become well-known by the 1958-59 season, with day lift tickets for the general public costing $3.50 and RMSC members paying $2.25.
One of the turning points came in 1968 when RED Mountain hosted Canada’s first FIS Alpine World Cup. Featuring Men’s and Women’s Giant Slalom and Slalom contests, this elite event confirmed the resort’s standing as a top skiing destination. Grey Mountain’s expansion in the summer of 2013 enhanced the resort’s offers by 1,000 acres (4.0 km²) and 22 designated routes, therefore highlighting its dedication to varied and demanding skiing conditions.
