Once referred to by Herodotus as an emerald island, a floating forest, Thassos is the northernmost Greek island. Serbs, Romanians, and Turks love this perfect location as a summer getaway.
According to tradition, the beauty of Europa, daughter of Phoenician king Agenor, enthralled the highest Greek god Zeus. Zeus chose to kidnap Europa and carry her to Crete in his obsession. Strict orders not to come home until they had found their sister, King Agenor set his four sons on a search determined to find his daughter. One of these boys, Thassos, was lured to a lovely island in the Aegean Sea; his spell was created by its rich foliage. Unable to go back home without his sister Europa, Thassos decided to stay on this magical island, always connected with his name.
Nowadays, seagulls greet visitors arriving on Thassos by ferry from Keramoti warmly. The island, with a just 100 km radius, can readily explored all around. Unlike some of its more cosmopolitan competitors, Thassos avoids luxurious yachts, chic restaurants, high-end boutiques, and a busy nightlife. Rather, it serves households with children and people looking for a quiet haven from the daily grind.
Thassos provides a wealth of immaculate beaches, each with own special appeal. Among the most often visited beaches with beautiful sands and glistening clean waves are Golden Beach, Paradise Beach, and Marble Beach. The island also features many secret coves just waiting to be explored for people looking for a more remote experience.
The historic relics of the island—including the Agora, the Theatre, and the Acropolis—will captivate history buffs. With their tiny alleys, whitewashed homes, and friendly residents, the little towns of Theologos, Panagia, and Potos also provide a window into classic Greek life.
Thassos is a gastronomic heaven with cuisine that honors its rich background and cultural inspirations. Local produce, fresh seafood, and classic recipes come together to provide a symphony of tastes that will entice even the most discriminating pallet.

One of the greenest Greek islands, Thassos, has scars from terrible forest fires that tore across the island once celebrated for its rich scenery. Resiliently, the island has come back alive with fresh seedlings growing. With more than a million olive trees, a mosaic of pine forests and olive groves graces the island today, a monument to its agricultural past. Thassos is also well-known for its profusion of marble resources, a legacy from ancient times when the island was honored for its beautiful stone.
Thassos’ capital, Limenas, sits barely 11 kilometers from the mainland. Even if traces of its ancient past still exist, such the agora, the great ruins that once dominated the city are no more visible. But the archeological museum has an amazing collection going back to the 7th century BC, including a startling 3.5-meter-high monument of a young man carrying a sacrifice lamb.
The second biggest city, Limenaria, graces Thassos’ southernmost point. The city is best known for its brilliant yellow palace set atop a hill. Originally owned by a German mining company running until 1963, this tower extracted the mineral wealth of the island. The little town of Potos calls near Limenaria, a well-known tourist destination with its breathtaking surroundings.
Panagia, tucked up in the mountains, enthralls with its small lanes and classic stone buildings. Comprising some of the oldest residents of the island, this charming town features many freshwater springs. Nearby, the Dragon’s Cave draws adventurers with its amazing stalactites, which seem to be legendary creatures caught in time.
For those looking for gastronomic pleasures, Theologos mountain town is well-known for presenting the most delicious lamb cuisine from the island. Theologos, a refuge for foodies, presents a taste of real Greek cuisine in a natural surroundings.
Rising on the brink of a cliff, the Archangel Michael Monastery presents amazing views of the Aegean Sea. One of the nails thought to have been used in the crucifixion of Jesus is kept in this 18th-century sanctuary; it is a holy relic A beloved pilgrimage site, the monastery’s dramatic location and spiritual relevance define it.

Vati Beach radiates a wild and untamed beauty unlike Marble Beach’s perfect appeal. Although everyone may not find appeal in its small, messy shoreline, the crystalline blue waves more than make up any alleged flaws.
Makriyamos Beach presents a unique experience for a little nostalgia since its vintage 1965 bungalows are tucked among verdant surroundings. Free roam of rabbits and peacocks adds to the whimsical ambiance. The beach’s unique appeal and remote location make it a worthy treat even if admission and deck chairs cost money.
Golden Beach, the island’s longest beach, has long history as a refuge for hippies in the past century. Thanks to its shallow waters and abundance of tavernas providing great local cuisine, it mostly appeals to families with children today.
Out of all the beaches on Thassos, Paradise Beach is unique in having an official nudist area. Those who want to connect with nature in its most unspoiled form may find peace in this remote cove.
Aliki, a magnificent bay with two beaches sometimes referred to as the “twins,” is located in the southern side of the island. Aliki is a popular place for swimmers and sun worshippers alike because of its powdery soft sand and glistening clean seas. This beautiful location gains historical mystery from the small peninsula separating the two bays, which houses the ruins of an ancient castle going back to the 7th century BC.
Psili Amos is a lively and energetic beach usually accompanied by throbbing music. Its immaculate seas and fine sand draw young people looking for sun, entertainment, and socializing.
Pefkari Beach is pleased to have a Blue Flag certification, which speaks to its environmental management, safety, and cleanliness. With so many water sports available, this well-kept beach appeals to active holidayers.
