Tamási

Located in the center of Tolna County, Hungary, is the picturesque village of Tamási. This tiny yet dynamic hamlet, with a population of over 8,000 residents, functions as the nucleus of the Tamási regionTamási, situated about 30 kilometers east of the illustrious Lake Balaton, has a distinctive amalgamation of historical significance, natural splendor, and contemporary conveniences.

The history of Tamási originates from the Roman era, when the town was established. The settlement’s name, originating from St. Thomas, signifies its profound religious past. Evidence of this extensive history is expressed in the Catholic church located in the town center, constructed over the remnants of an old house of worship.

Tamási’s history is characterized by epochs of occupation and strife. From 1525 to 1665, the region was governed by the Turks, significantly influencing its cultural environment. The town contributed to Hungary’s quest for independence, as indicated by the remnants of a fortress that formerly overlooked the hamlet. After the battle of independence in 1848-1849, the victorious Austrians extensively destroyed this castle, leaving relics that today stand as a heartbreaking testament to Tamási’s violent past.

The twentieth century introduced more transformations to Tamási. From 1945 to 1989, Soviet military sustained a presence in the town, with barracks situated on its periphery. Subsequent to the departure of the occupying troops, these facilities were repurposed as residential buildings, effectively assimilating into the contemporary landscape of Tamási.

Currently, Tamási is predominantly recognized for its premier attraction: the thermal bath and outdoor spa complex. This establishment has garnered Tamási notoriety as one of Hungary’s most frequented spa towns, attracting people from around the nation and beyond. The spa’s acclaim is justified due to its health-enhancing water quality and exceptional environment.

The spa complex spans seven hectares and provides a variety of experiences for tourists of all ages. Operational throughout the year, it has both outdoor and indoor swimming pools, with designated sections for children. The thermal water, emanating from the earth at a temperature of 52°C, is abundant in sodium, calcium, and potassium. The mineral features enhance the water’s esteemed health advantages, rendering it a desirable location for individuals pursuing relaxation and therapeutic effects.

In addition to its therapeutic amenities, Tamási features an abundance of natural beauty. The Gyulaj forest, formerly owned by the distinguished Esterházy family, exemplifies the ecological importance of the region. This extensive forest hosts one of the biggest populations of fallow deer globally, occupying an area of around 7.8 hectares. The forest’s significance transcends its fauna, having formerly functioned as a hunting reserve for party leaders from Budapest throughout the communist period.

For avian aficionados, the adjacent Pacsmag Lake offers an optimal environment for seeing a variety of ducks and raptors. Birdwatching camps run by ornithologists provide visitors the chance to engage with the region’s abundant avian diversity, enhancing Tamási’s allure as a haven for nature enthusiasts.

Tamási’s scenery exemplifies variety, including several geographical areas. The settlement is located in the northwestern region of Tolna County, within the Somogy-Tolnai hills. West of the Kapos River is the East-Kulső-Somogyi-Dombság, whilst the Tolnai-Hegyhát extends eastward toward the Sió-Sárvíz valley. This distinctive location situates Tamási in the convergence of many topographical elements, enhancing its aesthetic appeal.

The town’s height varies from 106 meters above sea level in the Nagy-Koppány valley to 247 meters at the summit of Kis-Likas mountain in the southern region of the town. This undulating landscape has wide, mostly linear hills interspersed with troughs created by minor north-south flowing streams. The terrain is augmented by loess, a nutrient-rich soil that has produced exceptional agricultural fields with an average worth of 28.5 gold crowns.

Agriculture is integral to Tamási’s economy and topography. The hills south of the town, especially those next to the right bank of the Nagy-Koppány stream, have extensive vineyards. The sun-drenched slopes enhance both the local wine business and the scenic allure of the region. In recent years, these areas have seen a progressive transition, marked by a rising number of residential homes and vacation properties interspersed amid the vineyards.

The hydrological profile of Tamási is characterized by a network of minor streams, with the Nagy-Koppány acting as the principal collector. These rivers ultimately converge into the Kapos River, which then merges with the Sió northeast of Tamási near Tolnanemedi. The outside of the town is interspersed with many artificial fish ponds, formed by damming several streams, including the GonozdiSzentmárton, and Cseringát. These aquatic features not only facilitate local farming but also enhance the region’s biodiversity.

The northern extension of the Pacsmagi lake system, augmented by the waters of Nagy-Koppány, borders the periphery of Tamási, therefore increasing the town’s ecological significance. This complex system of rivers and marshes provide essential habitats for diverse flora and wildlife, solidifying Tamási’s reputation as a sanctuary for nature lovers.

Notwithstanding its pastoral allure, Tamási is effectively linked to the remainder of Hungary. The town is reachable by Highway 61, which traverses between Dunaföldvár and Nagykanizsa, and Highway 65, linking Szekszárd with Siófok. These transit routes guarantee that Tamási stays accessible for both visitors and commuters.

Although Tamási lacks direct rail links due to the cessation of passenger services on adjacent lines in the 1990s, its road infrastructure mitigates this deficiency. The town’s strategic location, together with its well-maintained road system, facilitates simple access to major urban areas and regional tourism sites.
