Sibiu

Sibiu, a charming city in Transylvania, Romania, has a population of 134,309 as of the 2021 census, making it the country’s 15th largest city. Rich in history and culture, this mid-sized town lies roughly 275 kilometers northwest of Bucharest on the Cibin River, a tributary of the Olt River.

Over its lengthy existence, Sibiu has been known under several names: Hermannstadt in German, Cibinium in Latin, and Nagyszeben in Hungary. Strong links to the Saxon community, which helped define the town, also explain its Transylvanian Saxon dialect, which calls it Härmeschtat or Hermestatt.
