Rovinj/Rovigno is a Croatian city on the north Adriatic Sea with a population of 14,294 people (as of 2011). It is a renowned tourist destination and a busy fishing port on the western coast of the Istrian peninsula. Istriot, a Romance language that was previously extensively spoken in this section of Istria, is still spoken by certain locals. Because the town is legally bilingual (Italian and Croatian), both names are official and equal.

Tourism in Rovinj

  • St. Euphemia’s Basilica
  • Monkodonja
  • Zlatni Rt Forest Park
  • The Rovinj/Rovigno islands and mainland. Because of the pure beauty of the indented shoreline and its forests of holm oak and Alpine pine trees, these natural treasures have been hailed as “exceptional visual wonders.” This “region of exceptional natural beauty” stretches from the St. Ivan promontory to Barbariga, and includes all of the Rovinj/Rovigno islands as well as the mainland 500 metres from the beach line. The Rovinj/Rovigno archipelago is made up of 19 islands.
  • Limska Draga Fjord
  • The Palud marsh and the Due Sorelle Islands – Seagulls use the Due Sorelle (Two Sisters) islands as a breeding location. The Gustinja promontory is designated as a “forest vegetation reserve” due to its dense holm oak woodland.

Climate of Rovinj

Rovinj/Rovigno is one of nine localities in Istria County, western Croatia, that are officially classified as towns. It has a Mediterranean climate, with average temperatures ranging from 4.8 degrees Celsius (40.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in January to 22.3 degrees Celsius (72.1 degrees Fahrenheit) in July. The average yearly temperature is 16 degrees Celsius (60.8 degrees Fahrenheit). From mid-June through September, the sea temperature exceeds 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). The average annual sea temperature is 16.6 degrees Celsius (61.9 degrees Fahrenheit).

From May to September, Rovinj/Rovigno enjoys more than 10 hours of sunlight every day. The annual rainfall is 941 mm (37.05 in), and the average air humidity is 72 percent. Subtropical vegetation prevails.

The peninsula on which the city is located was once an island isolated from the mainland by a waterway. In 1763, the latter was completed. The Rovinj Archipelago consists of 22 islands.

Economy of Rovinj

Major Rovigno’s economic activity is tourism, and its bars, restaurants, and art galleries operate long hours during peak season (May–September), but just a few hours off-season.

The busiest section is in the heart of Rovinj/Rovigno, stretching from the main bus station to the old town, where the majority of pubs and clubs can be found.

Carrera Street, a completely pedestrianized road with numerous independent stores and art galleries, is the town’s primary central thoroughfare. A farmer’s market is situated near Valdibora Square, on the outskirts of town’s old district.

Rovinj/Rovigno is the county’s second-largest tourist attraction in terms of overnight stays, according to statistics provided by the Istria Tourist Board. Pula/Pola (Croatia) and Trieste (Italy) are the two nearest airports, and low-cost airlines such as Ryanair provide direct flights from western Europe to both airports throughout the summer season.

During the summer, a direct high-speed ferry service runs between Venice and Rovinj/Rovigno. In the summer, high-speed weekly routes to Ravenna and Cesenatico are also available.

There are several hotels in town, and beds are plentiful, however they are generally overbooked during the summer months. Private rooms or apartments are available, as well as bungalows, camping sites, and 2 to 4 star hotels. Hotel Monte Mulini and Hotel Lone are two luxurious 5-star boutique hotels in the city. Apart from hotels on the mainland, there are a few hotels on tiny islands near Rovinj/Rovigno that are connected to the mainland by boats that go from the city center to the islands’ hotels.
