Saint Julian’s | Introduction

Etymology

The town is named for Saint Julian, also known as Julian the Hospitaller and Julian the Poor, and is the patron saint of hunters. The town’s flag is similar to the Belgian flag, which is due to the fact that St Julian is supposed to be Belgian (from Ath), while it is debatable if he was also from France (Le Mans) or Italy (Naples). Prior to the Calendar of Saints revision, the commemoration to St Julian was held on January 27. Nowadays, the is commemorated on February 12th, but in Malta, an extra feast, in the spirit of the various summer feasts held around the island, is held on the final Sunday of August.
