Sagamité Soup
Historical accounts use sagamité for more than one cooked corn dish, from a light cornmeal porridge to heartier mixtures with fish, meat or berries. This is a contemporary plant-based home version, informed by the published work of Abenaki chef Lysanne O’Bomsawin of Odanak; it is neither a universal Indigenous recipe nor a historical reconstruction. Here, sunflower seeds soften in the broth while squash, corn and beans stay visible in the bowl.
