  1. Dublin is proud of the fact that it has one pub for every 100 inhabitants. The oldest Irish pub – “Sean’s Bar” – is located in Athlone, and it is believed that it dates back to 900 AD.
  2. An average Irishman drinks about 95 liters of beer each year, but the country is also ranked sixth in the list of the biggest consumers of this drink in Europe. More beer is drunk in the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Estonia and Poland.
  3. May is, on average, the driest month of the year in this country.
  4. After retirement the Irish usually go to the Canary Islands.
  5. Ireland has the lowest number of reported observations of unidentified flying objects (UFO) in the sky from all European countries.
  6. The White House was designed by the Irish architect James Hoban, who emigrated to the United States from the town of Kalan Kilkenny after the end of the American Revolutionary War.
  7. In 2002 Ireland was the first country in the world to impose a tax on plastic bags which can be purchased in stores and supermarkets.
  8. Muckanaghederdauhaulia is a coastal town in the county of Galway, which holds the title of the city with the longest name in Ireland.
  9. Drisheen is the Irish national dish. It is a kind of black pudding made of pork, cow, pig and sheep blood, bread, cereal and fat.
  10. The term boycott comes from the Irish captain James Boycott. It was first officially used in the magazine article “Inter-Ocean” on 12 October,1880.
