Mar del Plata is an Argentine city situated on the Atlantic Ocean’s shore in the southeast portion of Buenos Aires Province. It is the General Pueyrredón Partido’s leader. Mar del Plata is the second biggest city in the Province of Buenos Aires. The term “Mar del Plata” translates as “sea of the Plate area” or “sea next to the (River) Plate region.”

Mar del Plata is a significant fishing port and Argentina’s largest coastal resort. With a population of 614,350 residents as of the 2010 census [INDEC], it is Argentina’s seventh biggest city.

Tourism in Mar Del Plata

Mar del Plata is situated around 400 kilometers south of Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires. Summer months, from December to March, the beaches are densely packed with Porteos on vacation. Outside of the summer season, the city is much less busy. However, there are 700,000 year-round inhabitants. It is a sizable city with much to do, and not only during the summer months.

Mar del Plata is Argentina’s second most popular conference destination, behind Buenos Aires. Mar del Plata offers a diverse array of services in this field. Over fifty theater productions are presented over the summer season.

Climate of Mar Del Plata

Mar del Plata has an oceanic climate, which means that summers are humid and temperate, while winters are generally chilly. Summer maximum temperatures are approximately 27°C (81°F), however many days reach temperatures of 30°C (86°F) to 35°C (95°F). Strong onshore or southerly breezes, on the other hand, may maintain temperatures down to 20°C (68°F), with nights dipping below 10°C (50°F). Summer is normally the high season, and Easter is traditionally the last weekend before the peak season finishes. Spring and autumn provide unpredictable weather, with the possibility of heat waves or freezing temperatures. Winters are mild and wet, with a chance of frost. Snowfall does occur on occasion, as does the Sudestada, which brings prolonged rain, overcast weather, and turbulent waves. Cold southwestern winds carrying polar air masses from Antarctica may cause temperatures to fall below zero.
