Kos is a 42.1-by-11.5-kilometre island in the southeastern Aegean Sea, part of Greece’s Dodecanese chain, with a 2021 population of 37,089. It constitutes both a municipality and the principal town bearing the same name, lying opposite Bodrum on the Turkish coast. Administratively within the South Aegean region, Kos possesses a 112-kilometre coastline, diverse geological origins, a layered historical nomenclature stretching from Homeric verse to Ottoman records, and an economy anchored in tourism and agriculture.

Kos’s toponym first emerges in Homer’s Iliad as Κῶς, and archaeological and textual evidence suggest continuous local usage since antiquity. Classical authors also referred to the island as Meropis, Cea and Nymphaea. In medieval Romance tongues, it appeared as Stancho, Stanchio or Stinco, reflecting the Greek εις την Κω (“to Kos”), while Ottoman Turkish records name it İstanköy. Under the Knights Hospitaller, the island was termed Lango, a probable allusion to its elongated form, although later travellers such as Sir John Mandeville misinterpreted Lango as distinct from Kos. In modern Italian usage it is known as Coo. Residents and their produce carry the adjectival form “Koan” or “Coan,” as in Koan goods.

Geographically, Kos lies among a chain of submerged and emergent mountains that once connected it to Kalymnos, Kappari and the volcanic Nisyros. Earthquakes and subsidence in ancient times severed these land bridges, leaving an underwater chasm of some seventy metres between Kos and Kalymnos. The resulting island displays a rich lithological palette: Quaternary strata along its central axis have yielded fossil remains of prehistoric mammals—including horses, hippopotami and giant elephants—one of whose molars now resides in the University of Athens Paleontology Museum. Its 112-kilometre shoreline forms long, clean beaches and rocky promontories such as Cape Skandari (ancient Scandarium) in the northeast, Cape Lacter to the south and Cape Drecanum in the west.

The present municipality of Kos comprises the principal town and port of the same name—home to most of the island’s inhabitants—and a constellation of larger villages: Kardamena, Kefalos, Tingaki, Antimachia, Mastihari, Marmari and Pyli. Smaller settlements such as Zia, Zipari, Platani, Lagoudi and Asfendiou scatter across the interior and slopes. The island’s climate is classified as hot-summer Mediterranean, with temperate winters and prolonged, sun-filled summers that sustain both its agricultural and tourist economies.

Tourism dominates Kos’s economic life. The island’s beaches draw visitors to stretches known as Cavo Paradiso, Saint Theologian, Agios Stefanos, Saint Fokas, Therma, Kamari, Kardamena, Shellfish, Lampi, Limionas, Marble, Mastichari, Paradise Beach, Lighthouse, Turtle, Shears and Tigaki. Kos town offers whitewashed streets lined with hotels, tavernas and a famed “bar street,” while Kardamena has evolved into a youth-oriented resort, especially for visitors from the United Kingdom and Scandinavia, its bar and nightclub count swelling in step with ferry and flight arrivals. Over the past decade, the hospitality sector has witnessed a decisive shift towards luxury: from 2014 to 2023, five-star hotels nearly doubled both in number of establishments (+95.8 percent) and total beds (+103.3 percent), and four-star units grew by 34.2 percent in number and 8.5 percent in capacity. This transformation has reshaped coastal and town profiles, aligning infrastructure and services with high-end expectations, while one- and two-star lodgings have gradually waned.

Agriculture remains the second principal occupation. Vineyards, olive groves and fig trees punctuate inland slopes, while fields near the coast yield grapes, almonds, watermelons, tomatoes, wheat and corn. Although romaine lettuce enjoys the appellation “Cos lettuce”—a nod to its reputed origin here—the botanical name bears no direct etymological link to the island. Farming families often practice mixed cultivation, reflecting millennia-old land-use customs that produce both staples and cash crops for export.

The religious and cultural fabric of Kos is a palimpsest of its varied rulers. Orthodox Christianity prevails, with one of the Dodecanese’s four Orthodox cathedrals situated in Kos town. A Roman Catholic church serves a smaller community, while a mosque caters to the island’s Turkish Muslim residents. The synagogue, once active until the Second World War when the local Jewish community was tragically decimated by occupying forces, now stands restored as a cultural venue under municipal care, its preserved symbols recalling a vanished congregation.

Access to Kos is facilitated by air and sea. Kos International “Hippocrates” Airport (IATA KGS) receives charter and scheduled flights, chiefly from European hubs. Daily ferry connections link Kos town with Piraeus (Athens), Rhodes, Patmos and Leros; Kalymnos ferries run several times each day from Mastichari; Santorini links operate four times weekly; and Syros services appear twice weekly. Tilos Travel and Sky Marine offer year-round and seasonal crossings from Bodrum, Turkey—journeys of roughly twenty-five minutes for foot passengers—though the car ferry from Bodrum was not in service in 2023. Once ashore, a public bus network (KTEL) moves passengers island-wide, with routes linking the airport to Kos town, Mastichari and Kefalos. Passenger ferries depart regularly for Kalymnos, Nisyros and other islands during high season. Taxis present fixed airport fares of approximately fifteen euros to nearby villages, and rental of cars, scooters and ATVs is common, with multi-day scooter rates as low as fourteen euros per day. Roads throughout the island are predominantly asphalted and well maintained; a drive from Kos town to Kefalos takes about forty minutes.

Architecture on Kos bears multiple layers of foreign influence. Under Ottoman rule, the urban core took shape around a covered bazaar in Platanos Square and a commercial street lined with shops, under whose arcades Muslim residents once resided. Several mosques and public springs remain in scattered quarters. The Italian period, commencing in 1912 and consolidated after the 1933 earthquake that devastated the island, brought a rigorous urban plan. Italian architects divided Kos town into three class-based residential zones: the northern case popolari (working-class housing), the central palazzine (two-storey bourgeois houses with ground-floor shops) and the eastern villini (villas with gardens for Italian settlers). Public buildings—municipal markets, Casa del Fascio, Casa Balilla—embody rationalist and fascist architectural idioms, contrasting with earlier eclectic town hall, hospital and administration edifices. Ample green spaces planted with tropical species complete the Italian imprint, extending into Antimachia and Kardamena.

With the union of the Dodecanese to Greece in 1948 came a fresh phase of construction. Large hotels rose to accommodate burgeoning visitor numbers, often replacing or overshadowing traditional dwellings. Yet vestiges of vernacular architecture persist in villages such as Asfendiou, Pyli, Kefalos and Antimachia: low, flat-fronted single-family houses painted white, with bright-coloured doors and windows, flat roofs and simple wall construction. Interiors, arranged to suit rural family life, feature the kaniotoichos—long interior walls where dishes, mirrors and practical objects hang within reach. Stone-paved lanes and the classic windmills of Antimachia speak to pastoral heritage, even as tourism infrastructure expands.

Over millennia, Kos has navigated seismic shifts—geological, political, economic—while preserving a core identity rooted in Aegean rhythms and Mediterranean light. Its undulating coast, fields of olives and grapes, layers of built history and modern hospitality converge in an island that is neither museum nor mere resort, but a living synthesis of past and present. At each curve of coastline and each arc of a Venetian doorway, Kos invites reflection on continuity and change, reminding visitors that every shore holds its own story of endurance and renewal.
