Here are the stories behind the nicknames of the world’s greatest cities

New York – The Big Apple

Although it was thought that this is nickname older, recent studies have shown that the ‘Big Apple’ credited writer Edvard Martin, which was the nickname of the city mentioned in the book ‘The Wayfarer of New York. He wrote that the citizens of other cities New Yorkers considered arrogant and greedy, calling them, among other things, a big rotten apples. New York is despite today one of the most popular tourist cities in the world.

London – Old smoke

Singapore – Lion’s City

The English language name Singapore comes from its Malay name Singapura, meaning “Lion City”. The founder of the city, Sir Stamford Refls explained that this is the name chosen after he saw ‘merlion’ (mixture of lion and sirens). Legend is interesting, but lions are not native to Singapore or a mermaids.

Amsterdam, the Venice of the North

Philadelphia – City of Brotherly Love

founder of the town, William Penn, wanted to establish a place where everyone will be able to live in love and harmony. Penn named the city Philadelphia, which is Greek for brotherly love (from philos, “love” or “friendship”, and adelphos, “brother”).Thus, Philadelphia became and remained the city of brotherly love.

Jerusalem – the holy city

Special explanation here probably is not necessary. Jerusalem has a lot of meaning and sanctity of all three great monotheistic religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. Some of the most sacred (pilgrimage), places all three religions can be found in this city, and they share the temple mountain.

Mumbai – The city of dreams

Mumbai has earned this name because it is the richest city of India, so it is not surprising that many in it are coming in search of better job and life. Some try to succeed in all possible ways, and here is placed and Bollywood.

Las Vegas – Sin City

City originated in the desert of Nevada and is now best known for its many casinos, where few people earn, and most lose their money. It is possible to find all the vices so Las Vegas perfectly justifies its nickname.
