While many of Europe's magnificent cities remain eclipsed by their more well-known counterparts, it is a treasure store of enchanted towns. From the artistic appeal…
Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital and largest city of Brunei, has a population of around 100,700 as of 2017 and encompasses an area of 100.36 square kilometers. The core of Brunei’s political, business, and cultural life is this metropolitan center, BSB. Situated in the most populous part of the country, the Brunei-Muara District, Bandar Seri Begawan reflects both Brunei’s past importance and modern development.
The city’s beginnings are connected to a small Malay stilt community along the Brunei River that grew to be the modern Kampong Ayer. Crucially defining the character of the city, this settlement later became the capital of the Bruneian Sultanate in the 16th century. Beginning in the 19th century during the British protectorate, the change from a riverine community to a terrestrial administrative center persisted with the founding of the British Residency in the 20th century.
Bandar Seri Begawan has nomenclature that reflects historical importance. Originally known as Brunei Town, the city was renamed in 1970 to honor Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III, the 28th Sultan of Brunei and the father of Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan today. This shift marked a turning point in the history of the city and highlighted its growing importance as well as national pride in royal legacy.
Architectural elements of Bandar Seri Begawan mirror the wealth and cultural legacy of the country. Recognised as the biggest residential palace in the world by Guinness World Records, the Istana Nurul Iman reflects Brunei’s royal grandeur and riches. The Sultan of Brunei’s official residence is this building, which also greatly inspires national pride.
Another important site defining the skyline of the city is the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. With its golden domes and peaceful reflecting pools, this outstanding example of Islamic architecture represents Brunei’s great Islamic faith and artistic ability as well as a place of worship. The mosque’s central location in the city forms the center of religious and cultural events.
A unique feature of Bandar Seri Begawan is Kampong Ayer, sometimes known as the “Venice of the East.” Representing the largest of their kind worldwide, this vast water village offers insight into a centuries-standing way of life. Comprising homes, schools, and mosques built on stilts over the Brunei River, Kampong Ayer is a living museum that best illustrates how historical preservation can be combined with modern conveniences.
The city’s role as the hub for international activities has confirmed its global relevance. Bandar Seri Begawan demonstrated its capacity to run major athletic events in 1999 by staging the 20th Southeast Asian Games. The city’s growing relevance in regional political and economic spheres was highlighted by its choice as the host for the eighth APEC Summit in 2000.
Linking Bandar Seri Begawan with both national and international networks depends on the infrastructure supporting transportation. The main entrance point to Brunei is International Airport, 11 kilometers from the city center. The airport is situated along Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Highway, which provides access within ten minutes, so improving both resident and tourist travel efficiency. Based in the RBA Plaza in the city, Royal Brunei Airlines helps Bandar Seri Begawan to be a regional transportation hub.
Not insignificant historical events have shaped the growth of the city. Beginning in 1941 during World War II, Bandar Seri Begawan was under Japanese occupation that profoundly affected the city’s historical record. Allied forces’ 1945 liberation included bombing, which resulted in later reconstruction projects. Among the people living in the city, the events have strengthened resilience and will.
A major turning point in Bandar Seri Begawan’s history occurred on January 1, 1984 when Brunei was declared free from British control in the city center. This event started a new chapter for the country and the city, building a basis for rapid modernization and development while yet maintaining strong ties to cultural legacy.
As Brunei’s administrative and cultural capital, Bandar Seri Begawan greatly shapes the country’s future. The city is always changing to preserve its rich legacy while yet meeting the demands of modern urban growth. For residents, the mix of historical sites, contemporary infrastructure, and natural beauty makes it a point of pride as well as an interesting place for visitors.
