Description

The Ho Chi Minh City Post Office, also known as the Saigon Central Post Office, is a post office in downtown Ho Chi Minh City, near the city’s cathedral, the Saigon Notre-Dame Basilica. The structure was built in the late nineteenth century, when Vietnam was part of French Indochina. It is influenced by Gothic, Renaissance, and French styles. It was built between 1886 and 1891 and is today a popular tourist destination.

The Saigon Central Post Office is more than just a post office; it is also a historic structure that has witnessed numerous life-changing events and played an important part in the connection between Vietnam and the remaining two Indochina countries, Cambodia and Laos, during French colonization.

The construction of this tourist attraction began in 1886 and was completed in 1891, according to architect Foulhoux’s plan. Its design is frequently mistakenly attributed to Eiffel or Vildieu. Foreign visitors, including those from France, the origin of Saigon Central Post Office’s architecture, continue to laud the site. This post office is a great combination of neoclassical European architecture and Asian décor. This building’s aesthetic front has various European characteristics, such as palmette embellishments, Roman arches and windows, and wonderfully crafted reliefs.

Saigon Central Post Office is still the central post office of Ho Chi Minh City, receiving and delivering thousands of goods and mails every day. So, if you happen to visit this site, remember to send a handwritten note or a postcard to your loved ones back home.

Because of its importance during the colonial period, the Saigon Central Post Office is regarded as the city’s focal point. Because of its central location, it is easily accessible from everywhere in the city. You can take a local bus from Ben Thanh bus station to the Central Post Office bus stop or take a taxi, which may cost up to VND 40,000 (USD 2).
