Description

Chuong Village is located in Thanh Oai District, Ha Tay Province. Chuong Conical Hat Village is renowned for its unique “non” product among both domestic and international tourists.

It is easy to imagine an antique village with its characteristic courtyards filled with white conical hats and hat materials. Every six sessions on the 4th, 10th, 14th, 20th, 24th, and 30th days of the lunar calendar, the Chuong village market sells solely conical hats.

They are organized in white, lengthy stacks. The sparkling white of the conical hats, the pink of the girls’ cheeks, and the crisp sound of their laughter. It makes the market atmosphere more infused with national identity. The Chuong village market only sells traditional village goods. This is another unique aspect of Chuong Conical Hat Village that has been preserved.

According to the village’s history, royal queens and princesses wore conical hats throughout feudal times. Hai Cat, a Chuong village craftsman, taught himself how to manufacture this hat, so making it a traditional Chuong village handcraft that has been passed down from generation to generation.

Villagers do not produce conical hats as their primary occupation, but because their income from agricultural labor is insufficient, they do so as a side job. This job not only increases their income and improves their living conditions, but also makes the community famous for its characteristic conical hats.

Despite the fact that it is possible to purchase a “non la” anywhere, the best conical hats come from Chuong village due to its superior quality and skilled artisans. In the past, people wore conical hats as an original form of headwear to shield them from the sun and rain; today, Vietnamese women wear them as a fashion accessory.

The market of Chuong Village

Every lunar month on the 4th, 10th, 14th, 20th, 24th, and 30th, the Chuong village market will be held in the garden of the Chuong pagoda. Surprisingly, it occurs in only 2 hours. Beginning early in the morning on market day, white conical hats are ubiquitous.

It is intriguing that when the sun has not yet risen, the seller will wander around with 10 to 20 pieces of their wares and solicit clients. Therefore, if individuals wish to purchase conical hats in this market, they must locate a pleasant location to sit and wait for the vendor.

The typical cost of a conical hat is between 30,000 and 70,000 VND, while the most expensive one with intricate embellishments is 150,000 VND.

Chuong Village festival

Every year, on the tenth day of the third lunar month, the village of Chuong conical hat makers hosts a special event. On this day, the Chuong village market is the most busy because it occurs before the celebration. After touring the market, travelers typically consume breakfast and rest until the start of the festival.

As with other traditional villages in northern Vietnam, the Chuong village festival features a variety of classical sports, including wrestling, Mandarin square capturing, and dragon snake, among others. The most popular games during this festival are human chess and a rice cooking tournament. Numerous individuals, including Vietnamese from all walks of life and foreigners, visit Chuong village to observe and participate in these two sports.

In the rice cooking competition, there are eight teams, each with three members, including both young and elderly women. All of them wear ‘ao tu than’ – a mix of 4 pieces and ‘non quai thao’ – a festival-wearing cap – which is a traditional costume of northern Vietnam. Two team members will carry the pot while the other cooks rice while attempting to maintain a consistent fire in order to prepare the most delectable meal possible.

After thirty minutes, their performance will be evaluated based on factors such as the quality of the rice, their formal attire, and their behavior. This tournament recognizes the talents of Vietnamese women.

When tourists attend this festival, they may see the countryside of Vietnam and shop in a traditional marketplace. Followers of Buddhism also visit pagodas, make offerings, and pray for their wealth, health, and happiness.
