The steelpan, Trinidad’s unique instrument and the only acoustic instrument produced in the 20th century, is one of the main elements of the soundscape of the carnival and cause of great national pride. Steelpans get their distinctive, melodic sound from hammered and tuned oil drums producing a range of notes. The King and Queen’s costumes are the most complex since they often stand several meters tall and are rather difficult to carry or move. Usually, these show up in competitions. Established in 1963 to showcase Trinidad’s national instrument, the steelpan, Panorama is the main steelband tournament.
