Basses de les Salamandres is a pair of small high-mountain ponds above Coma de Ransol in Canillo parish, reached on the same marked outing as Estany del Querol. The communal walking guide places them at about 2,342 metres and names them for the salamanders associated with their waters. They are distinct from the larger Estany del Querol below, although most practical routes treat both as one excursion. The setting is a transition from pine woodland and open pasture to a high basin with mountain slopes and grazing ground. There is no road to the ponds, no staffed facility and no visitor centre. The approach is a real uphill walk, and summer access restrictions on the Ransol road may alter where a car can go or require a shuttle, so check the Comú de Canillo’s current transport arrangements before setting out.

The best-documented approach begins in the Ransol valley. The Comú de Canillo route guide directs drivers beyond the village to the Coma de Ransol road, then across the Pont de Mos junction and along the road to the Borda Marticella area, where trail signs mark the start. Its route description places Estany del Querol first and the Salamandres ponds after a further short rise. The Comú characterizes the trail as moderate and publishes a one-way distance of 2.92 kilometres, two hours one way and a maximum elevation of 2,342 metres at the ponds. These are the municipal guide’s figures, not a guarantee of walking time for every visitor. A separate Visit Andorra summary gives roughly three kilometres and 400 metres of ascent for the Querol-and-Salamandres route, while the Comú guide describes 600 metres of gain from its stated trailhead. The difference likely reflects start-point or route-measurement choices; use the more detailed local guide for planning and allow time for the climb.

In summer, access to the upper Coma de Ransol road has been managed to protect the valley. The Comú’s 2025 notice stated a vehicle restriction from 09:00 to 17:00 and an exclusive pedestrian-access period, with a tourist shuttle operating during the daytime restriction. The municipality also tendered a summer 2026 tourist transport service for the Ransol valley. These notices establish that road arrangements are seasonal and subject to change; they do not prove that the same timetable applies every year. Before driving, confirm the current season’s restriction period, shuttle stop, departures and fare with Canillo’s official channels. Do not rely on an older hiking track that says visitors can drive directly to Borda Marticella during hours when the road is closed to private vehicles.

The route itself rises through forest and then into broader grassland, where the view opens toward the surrounding ridges and the Vall d’Incles. Estany del Querol is the first named lake on the municipal itinerary. From there, a short additional climb reaches the two Salamandres ponds. Their name reflects the local association with salamanders, but visitors should observe wildlife without handling animals or disturbing the shallow wetland margins. These are fragile mountain waters rather than developed bathing pools: there are no lifeguards, changing facilities, toilets or services at the shoreline. Water level, vegetation and the appearance of the small ponds may vary with rainfall and season, so they can look different from photographs taken at another time of year.

The municipal guide describes a moderate marked path and recommends summer conditions for higher mountain walks. Visit Andorra’s route page gives a broad safe season from late June through September, potentially extending from May to October when weather and ground conditions allow. These dates are guidance, not an opening calendar. Snow patches, wet ground, storms or early winter conditions may make the route unsuitable, and a sunny forecast in the valley does not guarantee stable conditions above the forest. Wear footwear suited to an uphill mountain trail, carry water and an extra layer, and check the forecast before departure. Because the official route proceeds beyond the first pond to the Salamandres pair, visitors should not turn back at Estany del Querol if the ponds are their intended destination.

The ponds are unstaffed natural features with no fixed opening hours or admission gate. That does not mean the approach road is always open to private cars or that the trail is safe at any hour. Leave enough daylight for the return climb and descent, and treat any shuttle’s timetable as a separate transport service that may stop before the end of the trail. Dogs, grazing animals and wildlife share the valley; keep to the path where possible and follow local signs. No food or drink service is available at the destination, so plan supplies before leaving the Ransol valley. If the road restriction is active, the additional walk or shuttle connection may change the total outing significantly.

Basses de les Salamandres suits walkers who want a quieter, higher-water destination than a roadside viewpoint and are comfortable with a steady ascent. Its strongest context is the linked route: forest, pasture, Estany del Querol and then the small pair of ponds. The municipal trail notes describe around two hours one way from the chosen trailhead, and a return journey requires additional time; a short distance on a map should not be mistaken for a quick stop. Those seeking an easier outing can choose a lower section of the Ransol valley, while anyone continuing to the ponds should plan for the full return and verify road access before driving. The landscape is the attraction, not infrastructure, and its delicate wetland edges are best appreciated without leaving litter or disturbing wildlife.
