Refugi de Ribaescorjada is a small unguarded mountain hut in the Vall de Ribaescorjada above El Tarter. At about 2,075 metres, it sits between the Pla dels Espiolets and the Obaga de les Mussoles, in terrain used by hikers as well as by the wider Grandvalira mountain area. The hut belongs to Andorra’s free-refuge network and provides a simple place to rest or shelter during a mountain outing. It is not a staffed lodge, hotel or ski-resort service point.
The hut is listed as open year-round. Published capacity figures vary: the 2026 Visit Andorra refuge map gives six places, and the FAM live list also lists six, while older refuge summaries give eight. Plan for the current six-place figure and remember that free refuges cannot normally be reserved. A bed count is not a guarantee of availability; hikers may arrive from different directions, especially in summer. Bring the equipment you need to sleep independently, including a sleeping bag, food, water and warm layers. Do not assume that bedding or a guardian will be present.
Facilities are basic. FAM lists a fireplace, table and benches; the Government’s current map lists a stove and basic furniture, while older third-party summaries mention water nearby. Because water provision is not consistent across current records, do not rely on a source being available or potable. Carry sufficient water or a treatment method. If using a stove or fireplace, inspect it first, follow any current fire restrictions and leave it safe for the next party. Take rubbish back down and do not strip vegetation or burn unsuitable material for fuel.
The refuge can be approached on foot from Canillo or El Tarter and also lies amid a network of mountain paths and ski-area tracks. Visit Andorra’s Canillo short-distance recreation loop starts in the centre of Canillo, crosses the Valira d’Orient and follows a signed path toward Refugi Ribaescorjada. The official route then continues across woodland toward El Forn and the resort’s lake and activity area before returning by way of Prats. This gives visitors a way to include the hut in a longer outing without treating it as a road-accessible stop.
Trail conditions and route configuration can change with the seasons. The official short-distance circuit is presented as a trail-running itinerary, but its path can also be used by walkers who check the route and pace themselves. Other mapped itineraries pass the hut on high-level loops connecting Canillo, the Espiolets area and the valleys around El Tarter. Do not assume that ski lifts operate in summer or that winter resort tracks are open to pedestrians. Follow current signs and stay clear of active lift, construction or maintenance areas.
Ribaescorjada’s position offers a different perspective from the busy resort villages below. The hut is among open slopes, forest margins and mountain pastures, with views toward the Incles and Riu valleys. This is a practical shelter rather than a staffed viewpoint, so its appeal depends on the walk and the landscape rather than services at the door. In summer, expect hikers and mountain bikers on nearby paths; during snow season, the hut may be difficult to reach even though official listings describe it as open throughout the year.
The name appears with several spellings, including Ribaescorjada and Riba Escorxada. Use the official refuge name when following signs or checking a map, and verify the coordinates before leaving a marked route. The surrounding ski-domain tracks can make the terrain look more accessible than it is on foot; lifts, restaurants and seasonal pistes do not provide a dependable year-round approach to the hut.
Access is on foot. The Government and FAM provide map coordinates, but no public vehicle route or dedicated parking at the building is listed. Canillo and El Tarter provide road access and services at lower elevation, but the approach involves uphill walking. A secondary refuge directory describes routes from El Tarter and longer paths via the Pla de Buscalls or nearby bordes; treat those as route-planning references rather than a guarantee of current waymarking. Use a current topographic map and check trail status, snow and weather before leaving the village.
The hut may be useful as a rest point on a day hike or as one stop on a longer refuge circuit. It is not a destination that should be used to plan an outing without considering the rest of the route. Carry navigation, headlamp, charged phone and enough food for a delay. In winter, additional equipment and experience may be necessary, and the official “open all year” status refers to the hut, not to a safe approach. Turn back if visibility falls, snow becomes unstable or the route is beyond the ability of the group.
As a shared shelter, Ribaescorjada depends on visitors leaving it usable. Keep the interior clean, limit noise when others are resting and take all rubbish out. Use facilities carefully and conserve any fuel that may be present. Before an overnight, check current refuge information and be prepared to continue if the hut is full. Those precautions make this modest shelter a reliable part of a responsible mountain itinerary above El Tarter.
