Shopping in Ho Chi Minh City - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam - Travel S Helper

Shopping in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is the shopping capital of Vietnam where you can get almost everything ranging from the very basic to the most expensive things, both locally made and foreign branded products. Nevertheless, it’s not only about what but how and where.

The most visited shopping places in Saigon are long-established traditional markets known as Ben Thanh, Binh Tay, An Dong, Tan Dinh, Saigon Square and Dan Sinh. Walking around the stalls can result in a diverse range of items being filled up at affordable prices for you. If you love fashion then with just some hundreds of thousands dong, one can be fully dressed up. The trick is to become an active bargainer and not be afraid to demand huge discounts off prices first mentioned by store attendants.

For a contemporary luxurious retail environment consider a number of commercial centres in Saigon including Diamond Plaza, Zen Plaza, Parkson, Superbowl Thuong xa Tax or Co-op mart just to mention a few among many others. Luckily such a city sell – off season might have started already. At this time therefore if you go shopping getting nice famous brands will cost less even without bargaining.

Within downtown tourist zone there are several stores selling either authentic Vietnamese handicrafts or mass-produced plastic imitations. The majority of the best (and most expensive) things can be found in Dong Khoi Street and its side streets running parallel to it. The further west one moves towards Ben Thanh Market though the simpler and cheaper the stuff gets (though possibly the best wood-carving shop could be found on a stall on the back side of Ben Thanh). Some shops stock genuine silk fabric from Sapa as well as other areas located at higher latitudes. Beautiful plates plus bowls painted with lacquer are unique souvenirs from Vietnam while lacquered paintings themselves are fine art works sold all over Hanoi streets as well as in Ho Chi Minh City. Vietnamese propaganda posters can be highly impressive and have a sense of history.

Having local currency is very convenient when making purchases. Banks or official money exchange points can offer you a fair exchange rate, especially if compared to Vui Ban Street Branch of Statravel which would give you much lower conversion rates. Goldsmith shops also could provide currency at reasonable prices, it is however always better to know the current rate instead of relying on chance most often.

Markets

Ben Thanh Market
Shopping Malls

Ben Thanh Market (Chợ Bến Thành)

The market is a large one right in the centre of town with countless little stalls crammed with goods laid out in very narrow lanes. Due to its reputation with travellers, now it is divided between basic products (for example, like abundant small presents, jeans and t-shirts) and tourist items (fruit and vegetables, rice, kitchen wares, flowers, meat, fast food and local-style pickled fruits).
Mostly things are not priced and sellers always give tourists a price that is 50 – 100% higher than what they actually sell it for. The main strategy of separating tourists from their money here is vagueness; you never really know your price offer or how much exactly they demand for it or which rate of exchange currency will be used to count your change. Look out for these tricks (usually performed by an attractive young smiling girl) otherwise you just may end up losing more money than planned.

Ben Thanh Group operated stores are located directly at the northern side(back) of Ben Than Market. These shops sell items for fixed prices that are notably lower than those sold at market booths. No bargaining is required at all. If this good range of knockoffs isn’t enough there will be plenty more among the nearby side street stores and night market later on. If retail combat doesn’t appeal to you Ch Bnh Tây might be worth visiting instead of the well-known Ben Thanh’s touristic atmosphere.

Binh Tay Market
Shopping Malls

Chợ Bình Tây

The underappreciated doppelganger of Ben Thanh also markets unidentified fermented fish, dried seafood and jerky as well. In addition to these, it also specializes in spice trade, Chinese medicine and silk. If you want a wide variety of Vietnam silks and velvets, do not go to Ben Thanh Market; instead head to Binh Tây. Most of the items sold at Chợ Bình Tây are for bulk sale. Many goods from Ben Thanh market are sourced from here.

Artworks

  • Galerie Quynh, 65 De Tham St, District 1 (Between Co Bac and Co Giang), +84 8 3836801. Tu-Sa, 10:00-18:00. A significant gallery of contemporary art located in District 1. • Oil-Paintings, Bui Vien St (Near backpackers area in De Tham and Pham Ngu Lao). Along this street are various stores selling oil paintings. Here you can purchase a portrait of a Vietnamese painter or even have your own photos painted in oil. A easily available portrait can be obtained within two days. 450,000-5,000,000 dong.

  • Saigon Craft, Dong Khoi (Opposite Lucky Plaza). Lots of lacquerware.

Clothing

Vietnamese silk is great quality. Suit shopping can be enjoyable and reasonably inexpensive, but remember that you get what you pay for. Labor costs are not the reason why suits are so expensive. Frequently, tailors utilize textiles whose quality is overstated, such as the popular assertion that wool is “Italian/English Super 180.” Having a tailor change a $80 H & M suit is preferable to purchasing a cheap local suit. Every outfit should be 100% cotton. The optimal number of fittings for a tailor is three, with the third being only a check-in that will likely not require additional alterations.

  • BoSua Local Street Wear, 55B1 Vincom Tower, Dong Khoi St, District 1, +84 9 04142182. 09:00-22:00. 145,000 dong.

  • Khai Silk and Creation, 107 Dong Khoi. Shirts at around USD30 and ties for USD10. Shirts purchased off the rack can be altered at no additional cost. Can reproduce your garments using silk, linen, or Egyptian cotton. Two days for a shirt and five for a suit.

Electronics

The local electronics district surrounding Huynh Thuc Khang is a sight to behold, as everything is repaired and nothing is discarded. District 1 is about a 15-minute bus trip away via Bus 2. Hand-wound transformer and armature winding, as well as repair and reconstruction of loudspeakers. Consider any component; it may be available here, even 1968 helicopter parts. Some individuals bring ancient solid state and valve equipment here for affordable repair. Since most electrical equipment in Vietnam is manufactured here, it will be significantly less expensive than elsewhere.

While some of the cheapest electronics in the country may be obtained here, the majority of stores sell counterfeit goods. Compared to authentic items, counterfeit iPods are easy to identify, however camera batteries are more complex to evaluate. If you are considering purchasing more memory for your digital camera, for example, be aware that the majority of the memory will be counterfeit. These cards can be of poor quality, and one must consider whether it is worthwhile to risk precious vacation photographs. Worse, it has been reported that counterfeit batteries sold here have exploded. However, if you know what you’re doing, you can find some deals here.

  • DVD buffs with no scruples should head to Ho Tung Mao.
  • Kool Audiophiles, 16/1 Phan Ngu, F Dakao, District 1, +84 8 38201757.09:00-20:00. Headphone and earphone shop selling genuine products.
