Description
Stadium 974 (previously Ras Abu Aboud Stadium) is a football stadium in Doha, Qatar, located near Ras Abu Aboud. It is a temporary facility constructed from 974 repurposed shipping containers that will hold matches at the 2022 FIFA World Cup before being removed on 30 November 2021. It is the first temporary location in the history of the FIFA World Cup.
The stadium was conceptualized by Fenwick Iribarren Architects. The stadium is built on a 450 000 square meter coastal land and is positioned on a man-made peninsula. In tribute to the site’s industrial heritage and the international dialing number for Qatar (+974), its modular design utilizes 974 repurposed cargo containers. Some of the containers incorporate stadium amenities like restrooms and refreshment stands. It is the first time in the history of the FIFA World Cup that the shipping containers and seats used by the stadium will be demolished and donated to other underdeveloped nations across the globe; it is the first temporary venue in World Cup history.
This is one of eight stadiums being renovated for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The stadium conversion procurement process began in 2017. HBK Contracting Company (HBK), DCB-QA, Time Qatar, Fenwick Iribarren Architects (FI-A), Schlaich Bergermann Partner, and Hilson Maron were engaged in the building of the stadium.
Over 6,500 migrant laborers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka perished between 2010 and 2020 during the building of World Cup sites in Qatar, according to a study conducted by The Guardian in 2021.
Four stars were awarded by the Global Sustainability Assessment System to the stadium (GSAS).
Initially, the stadium was referred to as Ras Abu Aboud Stadium.
On 20 November 2021, during a launch event, the arena was formally called Stadium 974.
It held its debut match on November 30, 2021, the opening day of the 2021 FIFA Arab Cup, a match between the United Arab Emirates and Syria.
Five matches were played at the stadium during the tournament.
