Things To See in Qatar
For a relatively small peninsula in the Middle East, there is a lot to see in Qatar.
The history buff will not be disappointed, with a selection of ruins, rock art and museums to keep the mind wandering. The most famous is the archaeological site of Zubarah, which contains the remains of a once thriving port city. An early 20th century fort still exists and bears witness to a bygone era in the form of a museum. The petroglyphs of Al-Jassassiya in north-eastern Qatar are a remarkable site with 900 petroglyphs believed to date back to the ancient tribes that inhabited the peninsula in the 15th century BC.
There are a number of forts and towers throughout the country; most of them have also been restored as museums. On the outskirts of the city of Umm Salal Mohammed are the Barzan towers, built to protect the country’s rainwater basin. Another defensive watchtower is located in Al Khor. The popular Al Koot Fort is located in the heart of the capital Doha and houses a wide range of traditional handicrafts. Other structures include Fort Marwab, Fort Al Thughab, Fort Al Shaghab, Fort Al Rakiyat, Fort Al Wajbah, and the ruins of Fort Al Yussoufiya, Fort Umm Al Maa and Al Ghuwair Castle.
Art Galleries and Museums in Qatar
Qatar’s reputation for conservatism has not prevented it from studying even the most contentious artworks. Qatar absolutely adores art. In fact, it is the largest consumer of modern art in the world. From huge bronze statues to Arabic calligraphy to spot and spin paintings, Qatari art is inspired by both heritage and exposure to outside cultures.
The ultimate objective is to make Qatar the cultural and artistic capital of the Middle East. The emir’s sister is determined to do this by confronting the country’s traditional beliefs with modern art. Qatar’s art sector has expanded in recent years due to the proliferation of art spaces in Doha. The following galleries best represent the culture and history of Qatar at present.

Landmarks in Qatar
Doha Tower
The magnificent Doha Tower, commonly known as Burj Doha, rises 238 meters over Doha’s West Bay. Its phallic shape rises 46 stories above ground, with a further three floors underground. The building’s shape, according to the French architect Jean Nouvel, is symbolic of “totally assumed virility.”
Though this high-rise office skyscraper dominates the cityscape, it is far from the largest in the city. It is, however, one of the most distinctive. Its outward lattice of diagrid columns is reminiscent of Islamic Mashrabiya architecture, with a design meant to protect the building from the blazing heat and sandy residue that covers many of the region’s glass buildings. A photograph of this eye-catching tower will serve you well as a souvenir of your visit. It is extremely lovely when illuminated at night.
Location: 1 Al Corniche St, Doha, Qatar
Open: Sunday–Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm (closed Friday–Saturday)
Aspire Tower
Aspire Tower, also known as The Torch Doha, is a 300-meter high-rise hotel in the Aspire Zone complex in Doha, Qatar. The hotel is in a convenient location, close to various local attractions such as the Villaggio Mall Shopping Center and the Khalifa International Stadium. Because of its proximity to the stadium, the structure became a focal point when Qatar hosted the 15th Asian Games in December 2006.
Aspire Tower is one of Qatar’s highest structures. The Panorama Restaurant at the top of the tower offers a stunning view of the cityscape as well as exquisite food.
Location: Baaya, Doha, Qatar
Open: Panorama Restaurant, Daily from 6 pm to 11 pm
Tornado Tower
The hourglass shape of Tornado Tower is readily recognizable. This 52-story edifice, also known as the QIPCO Tower, stretches nearly 200 meters into the skyline. Despite the fact that the majority of its area is rented office space, there are a number of restaurants open to the public on the premises, including a sushi restaurant and a steakhouse. A gym can be located on the 27th floor, while exquisite dining with a view can be found on the 28th floor.
The tower is located in the West Bay neighborhood of Doha. If you’re driving, there’s plenty of parking in the subterranean garage. If you visit in the evening, you’ll be able to observe the building’s amazing external illumination, which ensures its place as a feature of the capital’s skyline.
Location: West Bay, Majlis Al Taawon St, Doha, Qatar
Sidra Public Art
A notable art piece by the controversial British artist Damien Hirst may be found directly in front of Sidra Medical and Research Center. This project, dubbed The Miraculous Journey, comprises of 14 huge bronze sculptures illustrating the human journey from conception to birth.
Hirst has shown the wonder of birth in dramatic detail with sculptures ranging in height from 5 to 11 meters. For others, the reality may be shocking, as one of the incidents presented involves a breech birth. The introduction of the sculptures caused some controversy at first, but this polarizing art installation is now highly admired. While some were offended by the scenes’ brutal realism, this unique public art piece is well worth a visit.
Location: Al Gharrafa St, Ar-Rayyan, Qatar
Qatar National Convention Center
Qatar National Convention Center, one of the region’s best event venues, houses multiple state-of-the-art theaters, conference halls, and meeting rooms within its distinctive architecture. The front of the building is modeled after the Sidra, a desert tree. Maman, the world-famous spider sculpture, may be found in the front of the entryway. Versions of this sculpture by French artist Louise Bourgeois can also be found in museums around the world, including the Tate Modern in London.
The convention center hosts top regional and worldwide artists and is a great place to see a show while in town. You’ll find anything from stand-up comedy and public debate forums to Hello Kitty Live and classical music here, so make sure to check ahead to find something that appeals to you.

Al Zubara Fort
Al Zubara Fort, located near the now-deserted village of the same name, is a vast fort topped by three massive circular turrets and a single rectangular tower. Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani erected the fort in 1938 to serve as a coast guard post. It is currently a museum with frequent displays about the history of the area.
The remains of the deserted town and the fort that protects it are a UNESCO World Heritage site located on the northwestern coast of the Qatar peninsula and can make for an intriguing day excursion from the city. Bring snacks and plenty of water, and keep in mind that there is limited shade when wandering here. It’s definitely better to avoid visiting between noon and early afternoon, when the heat is at its peak.

The Barzan Towers were built in the late 1800s to protect the valuable rainwater that accumulated in the nearby valley. Barzan means “high spot,” and with watchtowers that stand more than 16 meters tall, the site is appropriately titled. The towers were also used to observe the moon in order to precisely determine the start of Ramadan.
The towers are only 15 kilometers north of Doha and are open 24 hours a day, so there’s never a bad time to go. The architecture here, with its massive stairs and stunning buttresses, provides some wonderful photo opportunities for visitors, with the best views available from the top. There are also various businesses nearby, so you won’t be short of refreshments while visiting.

The Pigeon Towers in Qatar are without a doubt one of the country’s most unusual and captivating attractions. In addition to being a popular photo opportunity for tourists and locals, the towers serve a useful purpose. The towers, which are home to hundreds of pigeons, are designed to collect their droppings for use as fertilizer by local farmers.
The Pigeon Towers, situated adjacent to the Katara Mosque in the Katara Cultural Village, are fashioned in a traditional Islamic architecture. They are worth the trip to the cultural village by itself, but they may also be easily paired with other surrounding attractions such as an amphitheater, a convention center, and a beach.
