Description

The bustling markets known as souqs in Qatar are a thrill for any shopaholic who enjoys haggling and discovering unusual items. One such notable souq in Qatar is the Omani Souq, where one can get entirely Oman-made goods at very reasonable costs.

The Omani Souq, situated behind Wholesale Market, is modest and inconspicuous, yet brimming with surprising treasures. Under its large corrugated iron roof and along its tiny passageways, a traveler can discover oud scent of all sorts next to a stand selling Omani dried fish, or true Omani frankincense next to a stall selling camel sticks or spices, nuts, or plants. During certain periods of the year, if the desert has received sufficient rainfall, this is the area to get white truffles at very inexpensive costs.

The Omani Souk is a tiny open warehouse that mostly sells truffles, various types of dates, porcelain, hand crafted engraved clay pots, straw hats, and woven baskets, as well as a modest assortment of locally grown fruits and vegetables. A sector of the souq is devoted to flowers and other leafy plants, including daisies, hydrangeas, sunflowers, chrysanthemums, pansies, and the occasional bonsai tree.
