Description

Fire Station, a contemporary art venue in the center of Doha, is dedicated to assisting artists, curators, and the general public through residencies and public programs.

The Fire Station was erected in 1982 and served as the site of Qatar’s first civil defense authority until late 2012, when it was converted into an operational fire station. In 2014, it was repurposed and restored as a ‘adaptive reuse project’ to house the Fire Station: Artist in Residence initiative.

Ibrahim Al-Jaida, the building’s lead architect, aggressively retained the building’s original elements, such as its distinctive honeycomb façade and tower, and so contributed to preserve a piece of Doha’s early modern architecture. The annex and expanded building were subsequent modifications to the original structure, forming the Fire Station complex with the plaza.
