Refugi del Pla de l’Estany is a small, free mountain shelter in the upper Arinsal valley, within Comapedrosa Natural Park in La Massana parish. It stands at 2,050 metres on the northern side of the Pla de l’Estany pasture, close to the glacial lake and the trails that continue toward Refugi de les Fonts and the staffed Refugi de Comapedrosa. The hut is an unguarded refuge: it is not a hotel, restaurant or reservable lodge, and visitors should not assume that a bed will be available on arrival.
The Government of Andorra lists six beds and describes the refuge as open all year, with a fireplace, table and benches and water nearby. The Andorran Mountaineering Federation (FAM) currently lists ten beds and the same year-round opening, but does not list nearby water among the equipment. Since official sources disagree about capacity, plan on the lower figure of six and be prepared to sleep elsewhere or continue safely if it is full. “Open all year” describes the hut’s listed access status, not safe conditions on the approach. There is no booking system or attendant. Bring your own sleeping bag, food, warm clothing, light and water-treatment supplies. Water from a nearby stream or source is seasonal and should not be assumed potable or flowing.
The usual approach starts at the Arinsal dam, near the ski area car park. Visit Andorra’s route listing describes a family-oriented hike to the Pla de l’Estany area, with two variants: a more maintained, easier option and a less arranged, rougher alternative. Its published route figures are 2.8 kilometres and 420 metres of ascent, but its narrative also calls the route just over one kilometre. Treat the distance and duration as source estimates that may depend on the selected variant and measurement convention; check the current route track and signage before setting out. The official route is marked with white-and-red GR signs, following GR11/GR11.1, and a section also carries the yellow-and-red GRP markings. The refuge lies beyond the open pasture, rather than at the initial trailhead or by the dam.
The basin can also be reached as part of a longer traverse. The Camí de Percanela–Les Fonts–Pla de l’Estany route links Arinsal with the high ground above the village and the Pla de l’Estany area; its published itinerary is around 9.1 kilometres, with about 585 metres of ascent and 590 metres of descent, and an estimated four and a half hours. That is a different undertaking from the direct approach. The Government’s long-distance route information places the refuge on the GRP network between Les Fonts and the staffed Comapedrosa refuge, with an approximately three-hour stage onward toward Comapedrosa. These stage times cover demanding high-mountain terrain and should not be confused with the family route’s short-area description.
The setting is a broad alpine pasture framed by steep slopes, streams and glacial landforms. Lower on the approach, hazel groves and Scots pine give way to open agricultural clearings, dry-stone walls and traditional bordes, including the Bordes de les Agunes and Coruvilla. Near the lake, the landscape opens into high meadow and rocky mountain ground. The official nature-route description notes spring wildflowers and plants such as dogtooth violet, rose daphne and entire-leaved primrose. The refuge is useful as a resting and shelter point within this landscape; it does not provide an interpretation centre, organized activities or visitor services.
The Comapedrosa Natural Park maintains a wider network of refuges, but the names matter. Refugi del Pla de l’Estany is the unguarded shelter at 2,050 metres in the pasture basin. Refugi de les Fonts is another unguarded hut higher on a different section of the network, while Refugi de Comapedrosa is a separate staffed facility with paid services during its operating season and a small free annex outside that period. Do not navigate to the staffed refuge when intending to reach Pla de l’Estany, or treat the lake and refuge as interchangeable map destinations. Confirm the pin against the Government’s coordinates: 42°35′38″N, 1°27′40″E.
There are no daily opening hours because the shelter is unguarded. The year-round listing does not mean the route is suitable in winter or during poor weather. Visit Andorra advises that routes above 1,700 metres are generally best attempted from late June to late September; the season may extend from May to October when snow, weather and trail conditions allow. Snow, ice, low cloud and summer storms can change the risk quickly. Check current forecasts and park information, carry offline navigation, and make a conservative turnaround plan. The easier marked variant may still be a strenuous ascent for young children or visitors unused to mountain terrain.
Refugi del Pla de l’Estany suits self-sufficient hikers seeking a simple overnight shelter or a waypoint on a longer Comapedrosa traverse. Its appeal is the combination of an accessible mountain basin, a glacial lake and links to several established routes. Its limits are equally important: no staff, no reservation, uncertain capacity, no guaranteed water and no reliable daily service. Pack for an independent mountain outing, respect the park and leave the hut clean for the next walkers.
