Refugi de les Fonts is a small free mountain shelter below Pic de les Fonts, between the Coruvilla and Montmantell areas of the Comapedrosa Natural Park, in La Massana parish. At approximately 2,195 metres, it sits on the network of trails above Arinsal and is used by hikers crossing toward the Pla de l’Estany refuge, the Comapedrosa refuge and the GRT Route of the Three Nations. It is an unguarded mountain hut, not a staffed lodge, restaurant or visitor centre.
The Government lists the hut as open year-round, with a stove, table and benches and water nearby. FAM’s live refuge page gives ten places and also lists a fireplace and table. Visit Andorra’s older refuge entry and the 2026 official map indicate six places. Use six as the safer capacity expectation. There is no attendant, booking system or guaranteed sleeping space; the hut may already be occupied when you arrive. Bring a sleeping bag, food, warm layers, a headlamp and a water-treatment method. Nearby water may not be flowing in dry or freezing conditions and is not confirmed potable.
The most direct approach starts in Arinsal. Visit Andorra describes two alternatives: the Camí de Percanela–Bordes del Torner–Prat Nou route, or the path via Torrent de les Fonts, Borda de l’Areny and Collet de Font Podrida. Both require a mountain climb and join the high paths above the village. The older official refuge description estimates around 2½ hours and 650 metres of ascent, while giving a broader range of 1½ to 2½ hours depending on the chosen path. These are estimates, not a promise; route condition, fitness, weather and precise starting point affect the time. Use current tracks and signage rather than relying on a single generic “Arinsal” map pin.
Refugi de les Fonts sits on a cross-valley route as well as on local out-and-back approaches. The Government describes the GRT Three Nations stage from El Serrat via Llorts, Refugi de l’Angonella, Clot del Cavall and Les Fonts as about five hours. From Les Fonts, the next stage links the Pla de l’Estany refuge with the staffed Comapedrosa refuge in about three hours. Those are high-route stages, not the short walking estimates from Arinsal, and they may require a full day or multi-day plan. The official route leaflet for Camí de Percanela–Les Fonts–Pla de l’Estany passes nearby and connects the hut with forest tracks, Font Podrida and the Pla de l’Estany basin.
The landscape around the refuge combines steep forested slopes, mountain streams, dry-stone pastoral features and open high ground. Below the hut, black-pine woodland and traditional bordes frame the climb; above it, the terrain opens toward rocky ridges and the lake basins of the Comapedrosa range. The refuge itself is a simple stone structure opened in 1981, according to Visit Andorra’s lodging record. Its role is practical: a rest point and shelter on an established trail network, rather than a place with interpretive exhibits or organized activities.
The name can cause confusion with unrelated places using “Les Fonts.” In particular, the existing Travels Helper Circuit de les Fonts page is an urban walking route in Andorra la Vella, not this high mountain cabin. This refuge is in the La Massana parish, above Arinsal and within the Comapedrosa park. Visitors should use the full name and mountain coordinates when searching for directions, and should not expect to find a road-side tourist facility or the urban circuit.
There are no daily opening hours for this unguarded refuge. The official year-round designation does not mean that the trail is safe in every season. Government information states that cleaning and maintenance of unguarded refuges generally take place in summer. Water and fuel may not be available outside the main season. Use the fireplace only if permitted and safe, do not assume that wood is stocked, and pack all rubbish back down. Keep the shelter tidy for other walkers and avoid disturbing livestock, wildlife or fragile streamside vegetation.
At more than 2,000 metres, the approach requires mountain-aware planning. Visit Andorra recommends high routes above 1,700 metres chiefly from late June through late September, with shoulder-season travel only when ground and weather conditions permit. Snow, ice and low cloud can obscure the paths, while summer storms can develop quickly over ridges. Check weather and park advisories, carry offline navigation and enough food and water, and set a turnaround time. If connecting to Pla de l’Estany or the staffed Comapedrosa refuge, check the full elevation profile and planned return transport separately.
Refugi de les Fonts is a useful objective for experienced walkers looking for a basic shelter or a waypoint in the Comapedrosa mountains. It provides a quiet mountain setting above Arinsal and links naturally with the park’s other huts, but its small free facilities require self-sufficiency. Plan for limited space, uncertain water and a long walk back to the village; for booked accommodation, use the separate staffed Refugi del Comapedrosa rather than relying on this hut.
