Refugi del Comapedrosa is a staffed mountain refuge beside Estany de les Truites in the Comapedrosa Natural Park, La Massana parish. At about 2,265 metres, it is an important overnight base for the ascent of Pic de Comapedrosa, Andorra’s highest summit, and a stage stop on the GRP, GR11 and cross-border Route of the Three Nations. The approach is on foot through high mountain terrain; there is no road to the building, despite the refuge’s comparatively full service offering.
The main refuge has three floors and a stated capacity of 48 beds according to the park authority; FAM and the Government register list 50. It provides accommodation, meals, toilets and showers during the staffed season. The operator’s current 2026 website gives a continuous opening period from 1 June to 12 October, with opening outside those dates by reservation. It lists bar service from 8:00 to 21:00, lunch from 12:30 to 15:00 and dinner at 19:30. Booking ahead is strongly recommended, especially in July and August. Check the operator’s availability calendar for current opening, rates and service details before planning the hike.
There is also a distinct unguarded annex with ten free places for periods when the main refuge is not staffed. Government and FAM listings distinguish it from the paid staffed beds; the annex has fewer services and should not be mistaken for the main lodge. Capacity figures vary by source and may reflect changes following renovation: the park authority states 48, FAM lists 50, while some secondary databases report 45 staffed beds and ten annex places. Reserve the staffed refuge if you need a guaranteed bed or meal. Do not assume the annex will be open or suitable as a winter fallback without checking current information.
The standard route begins in Arinsal, at the Comapedrosa Natural Park information point near the gondola. It follows the marked GR past the village edge and into the valley, climbing through forest and alongside streams before emerging into open mountain terrain. Government information estimates about 1½ hours from the bottom of the valley, but the route includes sustained ascent; allow more time depending on fitness, weather and trail conditions. The refuge is close to Estany de les Truites, providing a natural rest point before summit routes. The approach is not a walk from a road-side car park at the hut: access is exclusively on foot.
From the refuge, a simple 1.5-kilometre biodiversity circuit with about 60 metres of elevation change explores habitats around the lake and refuge. More demanding routes climb toward Portella de Sanfons, Collada de Comapedrosa and the 2,942-metre summit. Pic de Comapedrosa is a serious high-mountain objective: upper slopes are rocky and exposed, weather can change quickly, and snow may remain into summer. Carry a map, water, warm clothing and suitable footwear; use a refuge stay to start early, not as a substitute for mountain preparation.
The surrounding park protects a range of alpine habitats, from black-pine forest and streams to lake basins, scree and high ridges. The refuge sits in a landscape used by hikers, mountaineers and wildlife. Its location near the lake makes it an appealing destination even for visitors who do not attempt the summit. Visitors can enjoy the water and mountain scenery, use the refuge’s meal service during staffed periods and explore the nearby marked circuit. Follow park rules, remain on established paths and avoid disturbing wildlife or grazing animals.
Because the hut serves long routes, access and return plans need to be realistic. Trekkers may reach it from Sorteny or from the western GR11 network; these are multi-hour mountain stages, not alternative short approaches. Government route information lists a three-hour stage from Refugi de les Fonts through Refugi del Pla de l’Estany to the staffed Comapedrosa refuge, while the multi-day Coronallacs route includes the hut as a key overnight. If crossing a pass or arriving from another refuge, verify the track, stage time and weather independently; route estimates depend on direction and condition.
The refuge’s current season may evolve. In July 2026, authorities completed major renovation work and discussed a winter pilot opening, but the operator’s published 2026 calendar still lists its continuous season through 12 October and opening outside that period by reservation. Do not infer a routine winter season from renovation news. Confirm directly with the refuge before an off-season visit, and check snow, avalanche and trail access conditions. The route may be physically accessible while meals, staff or the main lodging service are unavailable.
Refugi del Comapedrosa is ideal for a booked mountain overnight, an early summit start or a comfortable stage on a longer Andorran trek. Its services make it more convenient than a free shelter, but its high, foot-only approach remains demanding. Reserve the accommodation and meals you need, identify whether you are using the staffed building or free annex, and carry enough equipment to manage delays or a change of plan.
