Pic dels Aspres is a mountain summit above Estany de les Truites and Refugi de Comapedrosa in the protected Comapedrosa valleys of La Massana. At roughly 2,562 metres, it is much lower than the neighboring Pic de Comapedrosa, Andorra’s highest peak, but it rises prominently over the refuge basin and rewards climbers with a broad view across the park. The summit is reached by a demanding route from Arinsal that combines established paths with an unmarked, exposed final ridge. It is not the same destination as the lake or refuge below it, both of which can be visited without climbing to the top.

The name “Aspres” may appear in singular or plural forms, and the mountain is sometimes referred to as Pic des Aspres. Its position above the trout lake and refuge makes it an obvious landmark from the Comapedrosa approach. Pic de Comapedrosa stands higher to the west, while Pic de Sanfons and Pic del Pla de l’Estany lie among the other high ridges visible from the summit. The Aspres peak is a distinct objective and should not be confused with a viewpoint reached on the standard walk to Refugi de Comapedrosa.

The approach begins at the Comapedrosa park car park above Arinsal. Hikers first follow the communal path and GR11 toward Refugi de Comapedrosa. The refuge is reached after a long climb through forest and along the upper valley, and provides a useful landmark and rest point. From there, the route heads toward Collada de Comallempla and passes above Estany de les Truites. The slope to the col is moderately steep, but the final ridge is the crux: the path is unmarked, less traveled and exposed. Local route guidance emphasizes attention on the airy crest. The summit should only be attempted by hikers with confident navigation and comfort with exposure.

Visit La Massana lists the full Pic dels Aspres outing at approximately 9.4 kilometres, eight hours and nineteen minutes, and 1,436 metres of ascent. It rates the route difficult. Those numbers are for the summit outing rather than the simpler refuge approach. The route description warns that there is no water after passing Refugi de Comapedrosa, so hikers should fill bottles there if the fountain is operating and carry enough for the remainder. Service and water availability may change with season and weather, so check current refuge information and do not depend on the source being available.

The lower trail is part of the park’s established network, but the upper ridge requires more independent route-finding. The final approach includes rock and steep ground with limited room to correct a wrong turn. Some route descriptions of the Comapedrosa summit mention the Aspres ridge as a neighboring feature; those should not be assumed to describe the Pic dels Aspres ascent. Use the current route track, study the col and ridge access, and make a conservative assessment at the refuge. If the crest is wet, icy, windy or hidden by cloud, turning back to the refuge is the safer choice.

The mountain lies in a protected landscape of forests, alpine meadows, glacial lakes and wildlife. Follow marked routes through the lower park, avoid disturbing animals and plants, close gates, and carry rubbish back to Arinsal. The refuge and lake are popular resting points, but the summit sees fewer visitors and has no services. Mobile coverage may be unreliable; share the intended route and expected return time. Bring layers, waterproof protection and navigation even in summer, as weather can change rapidly above the tree line.

Pic dels Aspres is best suited to fit hikers who want a less familiar summit in the Comapedrosa group and have experience on exposed ridges. It provides a close view of the park’s lakes and major peaks without reaching the country high point, but the technical final section makes it more demanding than its elevation might suggest. Visitors who prefer a marked path can walk to Refugi de Comapedrosa and Estany de les Truites, then return without the summit ridge. That lower outing remains scenic and substantial, while avoiding the unmarked crest.

The summit’s high position above the refuge also makes it a useful viewpoint for understanding the glacial shape of the valley. The rounded lake basin below contrasts with the more broken crest and steep slopes near the top. This scenery is best appreciated in settled weather; cloud can quickly remove the visual landmarks that make the ridge easier to follow.

There is no admission fee or fixed opening schedule for the summit. Access is on foot, and the practical season depends on snow, weather and the state of the ridge. The refuge is a separate facility with its own operating arrangements. Check those details before relying on it for water or shelter. Plan for the full 9.4-kilometre summit outing, not the shorter approach to the hut, and leave sufficient daylight for a careful descent.

In summer, strong sun and reflected heat on bare slopes can be tiring, so carry sun protection and more water than the lower forest walk might require. In spring and autumn, snow patches can linger near the crest after the valley is dry. Check conditions at the refuge before committing to the unmarked section and turn around if the ridge is wet, icy or beyond the group’s confidence.
