Pic de Palomer is a modest summit above Erts in La Massana, Andorra, surrounded by forest rather than bare high-alpine rock. At roughly 2,050 metres, it offers a quieter local walk and a view across the mountain slopes toward the La Massana valleys. Unlike the exposed peaks of the Comapedrosa massif, Palomer is a lower woodland objective, but its steep trails still require care. The summit is a small, tree-covered high point, so the exact crest can be easy to pass without noticing. The appeal lies as much in the approach through forest and the surrounding views as in a dramatic open summit panorama.
The name can be confused with Palomera, a forested area and route network associated with Andorra la Vella, far to the south. Pic de Palomer is the specific summit above Erts and should also be kept separate from Alt de la Capa, a higher and more open mountain reached from the Pal ski area. Route pages and local hikers often use “Camí de Palomer” for the path descending from the summit; that trail is not the same thing as the mountain itself. Confirm that directions point to Erts and the Serra Plana approach before following a similarly named result.
One documented route begins near Erts and climbs by Camí de la Serra Plana. A junction offers a branch toward Xixerella, while continuing along Serra Plana leads toward Pic de Palomer. At the summit, the hiker needs to pay attention to the next junction: one option joins the path toward Coll de Turer, while a descent can branch right onto Camí de Palomer. The route report says the latter descent is technically demanding and steep. This matters because the easiest-looking line on a map may not be the best choice for a casual walker, especially when the ground is damp or covered with leaves.
The ridge and forest route links with nearby paths, so it is possible to plan a loop rather than retrace every step. The actual distance and elevation depend on the chosen trailhead and whether the circuit descends toward Galliner bordes, Xixerella or returns to Erts. The high point itself is only around 700 metres above the nearest reported parking elevation, but the steepness and condition of the paths influence effort. Do not rely on a single route recording as an official maintained trail specification. Download a current map or track, check recent conditions and identify the descent before starting uphill.
The summit is wooded, and the trees can limit visibility at the very top. Walkers may find clearer views along nearby openings and trail sections than at the highest point. The forest setting provides shade in warm weather and a pleasant contrast to the open alpine terrain higher in Andorra, but roots, loose stones and leaf litter can make the trail slippery. After rain, steep sections are particularly uncomfortable. Hiking poles and shoes with good grip can help, and a cautious pace is preferable on the descent. In winter, ice or snow can make the narrow local paths unsafe without suitable equipment.
Pic de Palomer works well as a half-day outing for hikers who want a local forest route near Erts rather than a full high-mountain expedition. It can be combined with other local paths or, for stronger walkers, extended toward Coll de Turer and the Pal side. These longer combinations should be planned separately: the summit route is not automatically a safe or well-marked connector to every nearby peak. If the weather worsens or the route becomes unclear, return along the known path rather than improvising down a steep forest slope.
There are no services, ticket office or fixed opening times at the summit. The village of Erts and La Massana provide the practical starting points for food and transport, while the trail itself is a natural path. Parking availability varies by trailhead, and visitors should use designated spaces without blocking local access. Public transport options should be checked for the day and season; a point-to-point route may require a ride back to the start. Carry water, as there is no guaranteed supply on the summit path.
The forest around Palomer is used by wildlife and residents, and local trails may cross private or working land. Keep to established paths, respect signs, close gates and avoid disturbing animals. Leave no rubbish and do not assume every visible track is public or maintained. Mobile coverage can be uneven under forest cover, so keep an offline route available and tell someone the intended return time if walking alone.
Pic de Palomer suits visitors seeking a quieter, lower mountain walk close to Erts, particularly those comfortable with steep forest paths and careful route-finding. It is not an accessible roadside viewpoint or a guaranteed open panorama. A clear plan for the descent is important, since Camí de Palomer can be steeper and more technical than the ascent path. There is no admission fee or schedule; access depends on trail conditions, weather and daylight.
