Pic de les Fonts is a summit on the ridge separating the La Massana and Ordino mountain areas of Andorra. At approximately 2,748–2,749 metres, it rises between Pic de la Burna and Pic de les Canals de Montmantell, above the valleys of Arinsal and Angonella. The name means “peak of the springs” in Catalan and is shared with nearby features, including Refugi de les Fonts and the wider Les Fonts area. The summit is a distinct high point; the refuge is lower on the route and the Angonella lakes lie in a separate basin. Reaching the peak is a strenuous mountain outing, usually as part of a longer ridge traverse rather than a simple visit to the shelter.
Pic de les Fonts is often climbed together with Pic de la Burna, Pic del Clot del Cavall and Pic de Percanela. One route from Arinsal ascends through the Percanela ridge and continues north to Clot del Cavall and Burna before reaching Les Fonts. Another outing approaches through the Montmantell lakes: hikers follow the valley toward a shepherd’s cabin, leave the lakes route near Collada de Montmantell and climb the ridge to the summit. From the top, a traverse can continue over Burna and the other ridge points or descend toward Pla de l’Estany. These are different route choices, and the preferred line depends on whether the plan is a summit out-and-back, a longer circuit or a point-to-point traverse.
Visit Andorra’s official Camí de Percanela–Les Fonts–Pla de l’Estany route begins in Arinsal village and follows marked communal paths, GR and GRP sections through forest toward Font Podrida and Pla de l’Estany. It is listed at about 9.12 kilometres with 585 metres of ascent and 590 metres of descent, usually three to six hours, and a difficult rating. This official loop is useful for exploring the valley and its shelters, but it does not give the full profile for climbing Pic de les Fonts. A summit diversion or ridge circuit adds distance, elevation and less straightforward terrain. Do not treat the marked circuit’s modest elevation gain as the summit’s total climb.
The summit approach moves from forest and pastoral clearings into open high ground. Paths can become faint on the ridge, where cairns, trail junctions and rocky steps require attention. Route descriptions report a long climb from Arinsal and an ascent of around 1,200 metres for some multi-summit circuits. The route may include uneven rock, scree and snow patches, especially on shaded slopes. Although some stretches of the ridge are described as non-technical, the overall outing remains physically demanding, and conditions can make the crest more serious. Use a current map and plan the descent as carefully as the ascent.
The summit has broad views over the Comapedrosa natural park, Ordino valley and surrounding Pyrenean peaks. Its location on the parish boundary makes it a useful landmark for understanding how the Arinsal and Angonella basins connect across the ridge. The nearby Refugi de les Fonts provides shelter on a lower approach, but it is not at the summit and may be unstaffed. Check current refuge information rather than assuming that water, food or overnight services will be available. The refuge trail from Arinsal is itself a separate route; a visit there does not automatically include Pic de les Fonts.
Weather and season determine how demanding the ridge becomes. High ground is exposed to wind, sun, storms and cloud, while snow may linger on north-facing slopes into early summer. Start early, check a mountain forecast and carry warm layers, rain protection, food, water and offline navigation. Winter conditions call for specific snow and avalanche judgment; the existence of summer tracks does not make a winter ascent safe. Some slopes around the ridge have avalanche-control infrastructure, which is a reminder that snow conditions can be serious. Turn back if visibility falls or the group is tiring before the descent.
The surrounding terrain is a natural mountain environment used by wildlife and livestock. Keep to marked paths on the lower trails, avoid disturbing animals, close gates and leave no rubbish. Where the summit route leaves maintained tracks, avoid trampling fragile vegetation or cutting directly down steep slopes. Mobile reception may be intermittent, and there are no staffed services on the crest. Share the intended route with someone and include time for route-finding and a slower-than-expected descent.
Pic de les Fonts is best suited to fit hikers who want a substantial Andorran ridge day and are comfortable navigating beyond the easiest marked trails. It rewards a longer traverse with varied scenery and a succession of viewpoints, but is not a casual add-on to a refuge visit. Visitors looking for a shorter outing can choose the marked Arinsal–Les Fonts–Pla de l’Estany circuit or the Angonella lake route, while keeping in mind that the latter also has significant ascent. There is no admission fee or fixed opening schedule for the summit. Access is on foot and depends on daylight, weather, snow and the route selected.
