Description

Chua Ba Da is located on the south side of Pho Nha Tho to the west of Hoan Kiem Lake.

The pagoda dates back to 1056, during the reign of King Ly Thanh Tong. It was given the name Ba Da pagoda (Stone Lady Pagoda) when, while erecting the walls of the new fortress, a stone resembling a woman was discovered.

The locals, believing this to be a divine sign from the land’s Mother Goddess, erected a temple in the location to commemorate the stone. Throughout history, the pagoda has been reconstructed while retaining its sacred Buddhist symbol of Hanoi.

Follow a little road off of Nha Tho street, and you’ll discover the pagoda in a very quiet nook, opposite the bustling city activity outside, which makes this location more serene and tranquil. Given the impression that you are in a very different location than the center of Hanoi’s capital, Hanoi is a unique city where the old and new coexist.

Currently, while the temple is still in use and open to the public, it also serves as the headquarters of the Municipal Buddhist Association. As the temple is located back from the street and is barely visible to passing pedestrians, it is significantly less crowded than other nearby historical sites. Its primary structures are arranged in the shape of the Vietnamese character Cong, with the front hall housing statues of the Buddhas and their followers and the back hall housing statues of local deities.
