Today's the day!

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be the 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial international men’s football championship contested by the senior national teams of FIFA member countries. It will be held in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022. This will be the first World Cup held in the Arab world and the second World Cup staged entirely in Asia, following the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. Furthermore, the tournament will be the last to feature 32 teams, with a 48-team increase planned for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Due to Qatar’s extreme summer heat, this World Cup will be hosted from late November to mid-December, making it the first tournament not to be held in May, June, or July and to be staged in the northern autumn; it will be played over a shorter span of roughly 29 days. The tournament begins with a match between Qatar and Ecuador at Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor. The final is scheduled for December 18, 2022, which is also Qatar National Day. France is the reigning World Cup champion.

Unlike past FIFA World Cups, which have been held in June and July, the 2022 World Cup will be held in November and December to escape the extreme summer heat in Qatar. As a result, the World Cup will be held in the midst of the domestic football leagues’ seasons, which begin in late July or August, including all of the major European leagues, who have been forced to include extended pauses into their domestic schedules to accommodate the World Cup. To avoid playing group matches the following year, major European championships have arranged their respective competitions’ group matches to be played before the World Cup. Domestic leagues, which generally begin their seasons in the northern spring and continue through the summer, will be able to finish their seasons before the tournament begins.

FIFA confirmed the match schedule on July 15, 2020.

The group stage was supposed to start on November 21, with four matches per day; however, the schedule was later changed by moving the Qatar vs Ecuador game to November 20, after Qatar successfully persuaded FIFA to allow their team to open the tournament.

Kick-off times for the first two rounds of the group stage are 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, and 22:00, and 18:00 and 22:00 for the final round and knockout round matches. The third-place match will take place on December 17, 2022, at the Khalifa International Stadium, and the final will take place on December 18, 2022, at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.

Unlike previous tournaments, where the match venues and kick-off times for each fixture were determined prior to the draw, the assignment of group fixtures for each matchday to a specific venue and kick-off time was made only after the group stage draw was completed and the teams for each specific fixture were known. Because of the venues’ close proximity, the organizers were able to optimize stadium allocation for spectators and kick-off times for broadcast audiences. The sole confirmed group stage matchup was Qatar’s opening match, which was scheduled to begin at 19:00 on November 21 at the Al Bayt Stadium.

The following stadiums were assigned to each group’s matches:

  • Groups A, B, E, F: Al Bayt Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Ahmad bin Ali Stadium
  • Groups C, D, G, H: Lusail Iconic Stadium, Stadium 974, Education City Stadium, Al Janoub Stadium

Following the draw, FIFA confirmed the group stage venue and kick-off times for 1 April 2022. On August 11, it was announced that Qatar vs. Ecuador had been moved ahead one day, becoming the tournament’s opening match, while Senegal vs. Netherlands, which would have begun the tournament under the original schedule, had been reassigned to the freed-up timeslot.

Symbols Of World Cup Qatar 2022

Mascot

The official mascot of the tournament was revealed on April 1, 2022, during the group stage draw. Its name is Laeeb, which is an Arabic term that means “super-talented player.” According to FIFA’s official website, “Laʼeeb will be known for his youthful spirit; spreading joy and confidence wherever he goes,” and the character’s official backstory, published there, claims that it comes from a parallel world where tournament mascots live, “a world where ideas and creativity form the basis of characters that live in everyone’s minds.”

Match ball

On March 30, 2022, the official match ball, the “Al Rihla,” was introduced. It was mostly influenced by Qatar’s culture, architecture, famous boats, and flag. The word Al Rihla means “the trip” in Arabic. The ball was developed with water-based glues and inks, making it the first official match ball made with water-based glues and inks.

Adidas employed certain new features to offer speed and improve ball accuracy as “the game gets faster” and “speeds up.”

Music

For the first time, instead of just one official song, an entire FIFA World Cup official soundtrack was released for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The album’s first single, “Hayya Hayya (Better Together),” performed by Trinidad Cardona, Davido, and AISHA, was released on April 1, 2022, along with the music video.

The second song, “Arhbo,” sung by Gims and Ozuna, will be released on August 19, 2022, along with the music video.

“Light The Sky,” performed by Nora Fatehi, Manal, Rahma Riad, and Balqees, is the third song. RedOne composed the song, which was released on October 7, 2022, accompanied with a music video.

Stadiums in Qatar

Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium

The stadium, designed as a tent in the desert, is another another cutting-edge facility that will astound thousands of FIFA World Cup spectators.

The FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadium is located on the outskirts of the wilderness, on the site of the previous Ahmad bin Ali Stadium. Al Rayyan, renowned as the “Gateway to the Desert,” has long advocated for environmental causes. As a result, the stadium was built with sustainability in mind. Following the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, the upper tier and nearly half of the 40,000 seats will be donated to football development projects across the world.

The façade of Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium incorporates design elements that represent Qatari culture and Islamic architecture, as well as topics such as family values, desert beauty, flora and fauna, and international trade. These elements are combined in a shield pattern that represents strength and unity.

Capacity: 40,000
Location: Umm Al Afaei, 20km west of central Doha

Al Bayt Stadium

Al Bayt Stadium, which is shaped like a traditional Bedouin tent, will host the first match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The first match of the first FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM in the Middle East will be played in a stadium called home. Al Bayt Stadium is designed in the shape of a typical Bedouin tent – bayt al sha’ar – a symbol of hospitality in the desert where visitors come from all around to rest and meet locals.

The design of Al Bayt Stadium is a modern interpretation of ancient tradition, ensuring a memorable experience for fans. Following the event, Al Bayt Stadium will be adapted to serve the surrounding community by housing a 5-star hotel, shopping center, gym, and multipurpose hall. Near the stadium, a branch of Aspetar, Qatar’s renowned sports medicine center, will open. Dedicated jogging, cycling, and horseback riding trails will encourage even more physical activity.

Capacity: 60,000
Location: Al Khor City, 35km north of Doha

Al Janoub Stadium

The sails of Qatar’s wooden dhow boats, which have traditionally provided most of the country’s economy, are reflected in the design of this stadium.

Al Janoub Stadium, one of eight sites for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM, was designed by British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. Located near the historic fishing hamlet of Wakrah, draws inspiration from the dhow boats that dot Qatar’s waters and the pearls that were once an important part of the country’s economy. Following the competition, the stadium will be used as a local community facility.

Al Janoub Stadium, located in one of Qatar’s oldest neighborhoods, was dedicated on May 16, 2019, during the Amir Cup final. The sails of traditional dhow boats used by fishermen and pearl divers inspired the 40,000-seat stadium. The curvilinear roof reflects Al Wakrah’s seafaring history, with bending beams supporting the roof that resemble a ship’s hull and providing shade and shelter.

The Global Sustainability Assessment System gave Al Janoub Stadium a Class A* sustainability certification (GSAS). It has innovative cooling technology that efficiently uses energy to cool the stadium, allowing it to be used all year. In keeping with the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM objective of sustainability, half of the stadium’s seats can be removed and transported to a country in need of sporting infrastructure.

Several facilities are being built around Al Janoub stadium with a legacy in mind. Bicycle pathways, horseback riding and running trails, cafés, gyms, and parkland are examples.

Capacity: 40,000
Location: Al Wakrah, 22km south of central Doha

Al Thumama Stadium

Al Thumama Stadium was designed in the shape of local headwear for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The gahfiya, a traditional headpiece in Qatar and around the Middle East, inspired the first stadium created by a Qatari architect, Ibrahim Mohammed Jaidah. The stadium’s white cladding is inspired by the intricate design of the gahfiya, a headpiece worn by young boys until they reach adulthood, when ghutras are added atop the gahfiya.

In the sport and stadiums category, Al Thumama Stadium got the MIPIM/Architectural Review Future Project Award 2018. At the 17th edition of the MIPIM/Architectural Review Future Project Awards, it also received the best design prize in the “Sports Facilities and Stadiums Under Construction” category. This prize honors the technological breakthroughs utilized in its design and construction, as well as their environmental impact.

Capacity: 40,000
Location: Al Thumama Stadium, 12km south of central Doha

Education City Stadium

The Education City Stadium, as a World Cup stadium, embodies the Qatar Foundation’s and the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy’s joint vision of making the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 a catalyst for social and human development.

The stadium, which is located in the heart of Education City, a knowledge center that develops tomorrow’s leaders, will host up to the quarter-finals stage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. It is destined to meet the future’s needs for sustainable, ecological, and healthy living. Education City Stadium, dubbed the “Diamond in the Desert” due to its façade, incorporates triangles that produce complicated, diamond-esque mathematical patterns, appearing to change color as the sun moves across the sky. The façade transforms into a bright light show at night, making it even more eye-catching.

The stadium’s design, like diamonds, indicates quality, longevity, and resilience, and it will be loved – both for the memories it holds and for its future significance to the country and region.

Education City Stadium opened on June 15th, 2020, and staged its first official match on September 3rd, 2020, as part of the Qatar Stars League season 2020-21.

It is one of the eight official FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM venues, having a capacity of 40,000 seats and 20 percent green building materials. Following the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, 20,000 seats will be retained for university athletics, with the remainder gifted to countries in need of sporting facilities.

As with other FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadiums, innovative cooling technology maintain ideal temperatures for players and supporters all year, while accessibility for disabled fans is great. Those seeking additional comfort can watch the game from the hospitality and VIP lounges. Fans will notice several green spaces and cutting-edge amenities surrounding the theater as they enter, all created with sustainability and the future in mind. Football practice fields, a golf course, and stores are among the amenities.

The Gulf Organisation for Research and Development (GORD) awarded Education City Stadium three awards: a five-star rating in Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) Design & Build certification, a Class A* rating in GSAS Construction Management, and a GSAS Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio certification. These awards demonstrate Qatar’s dedication to developing long-term infrastructure for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Capacity: 40,000
Location: Al Rayyan, 7km north-west of central Doha

Khalifa International Stadium

With cutting-edge infrastructure and facilities, this multi-purpose stadium demonstrates Qatar’s devotion to sport.

The Khalifa International (or National) Stadium reopened in 2017 after major redevelopment, making it the oldest stadium in Qatar and the first FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022TM event venue. Major competitions hosted at the stadium include the Asian Games in 2006, the AFC Asian Cup in 2007, and the Arabian Gulf Cup in 1976, 1992, 2004, and 2019.

The stadium is located within Doha Sports City Home, which also houses sport and sports medicine facilities, research and education centers, and positions Qatar as a complete sporting destination.

The stadium, which reopened in 2017 following substantial renovations, features clever cooling technology that decreases energy usage, as well as energy-efficient lighting systems and plumbing fixtures.

Khalifa International is the world’s first stadium to receive a four-star rating from the Global Sustainability Assessment System. To reduce the stadium’s ecological impact, the stadium’s developers adopted cutting-edge sustainability principles in its design, construction, and operation.

Capacity: 40,000
Location: Aspire, 5km west of central Doha

Lusail Stadium

If there was ever a stadium intended to not only meet but also exceed the expectations of a specific type of fan, official, and VIP, Lusail Stadium is it.

The Lusail Stadium, iconic in name and nature, is located within Lusail, Qatar’s master planned metropolis of the future.

This 80,000-seat masterpiece, designed by world-renowned British architects Foster + Partners, was the largest stadium by capacity for the first FIFA World Cup to be held in the region and is expected to be the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 Final Match location. The genuinely recognizable design was inspired by the classic fanar lantern and decorated with Arab bowls and containers representing Qatar’s heritage and culture.

Lusail Stadium is around 15 kilometers north of Doha and is easily accessible by metro.

The arena is part of the master-planned community of Lusail City, which also includes a marina, commercial areas, an entertainment hub, houses, retail malls, golf courses, schools, medical centers, and mosques. Lusail City is a sustainable metropolis with over 200,000 citizens and a stadium that takes sports venues to unparalleled heights.

Capacity: 80,000
Location: Lusail City, 20km north of central Doha

Stadium 974

The newest Stadium 974 being constructed at Ras Abu Aboud is a model of sustainable architecture and innovative design. It is the world’s first arena built to be demolished after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Stadium 974 (formerly known as Ras Abu Aboud Stadium), located on the east coast with Doha’s sparkling core business area across the river, is a spectacular, ultra-modern venue that will host a number of group stage matches during the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

This creative and pioneering stadium with a capacity of 40,000 was built from shipping containers and steel features that pay homage to Qatar’s rich nautical history. Each container set in a different hue creates a venue that is incredibly eye-catching.

Many sections of the arena, including seats, containers, and even the roof, will be utilized after the competition. The stadium will be demolished to make room for a breathtaking waterfront development for all to enjoy.

Stadium 974 was made with 974 shipping containers, which is also the international dialing code for Qatar. The objective is to remind the international community of the Qatari government’s commitment to always consider sustainability when evaluating big projects. After demolition, the site will eventually be transformed into an upscale waterfront entertainment area with restaurants, retail opportunities, and more.

Capacity: 40,000
Location: Ras Abu Aboud, 10km east of central Doha
