The Main Astronomical Point of Bulgaria is the small yellow octagonal tower behind Sofia’s Central Military Club, close to Alexander Nevsky Square. Built in 1920 by the Geographic Institute of the Ministry of War, it served as the principal astronomical reference point for Bulgaria’s state triangulation system. It is a fascinating stop for visitors interested in maps, surveying, astronomy or the scientific infrastructure behind a modern state, but it is not a conventional observatory open for routine tours. The exterior is the practical visitor experience; access to the tower itself has been restricted and should not be assumed.

Triangulation was one of the key methods used to build accurate national maps before satellite positioning. Surveyors established networks of fixed points and measured angles between them, creating connected triangles across the country. The Sofia tower gave that system a precisely observed astronomical reference. In practical terms, it helped anchor measurements of position and longitude to a known point rather than to an approximate city location. That makes the modest structure far more important historically than its size suggests.

The most significant measurement associated with the site came in 1930. Bulgarian sources credit Academician Vladimir Hristov with determining the tower’s geographic longitude through bilateral observations carried out with the Prussian Geodetic Institute in Potsdam. Bulgaria’s geodetic administration preserves the historical figure for the longitude in its own publications. This was part of a wider effort to connect Bulgarian measurement standards with European geodetic practice rather than treat national mapping as an isolated system.

The network became more international in 1957–1958, when the main Bulgarian astronomical point was connected with principal astronomical points in Poland, Romania and Hungary. By then geodesy had already moved far beyond the original 1920 context, but the tower still played a role in a regional scientific framework. Later, growing light pollution in central Sofia reduced the value of the site for astronomical observations, and the building ceased to function as an active observing station.

Its present status is more complicated than a simple “open” or “closed” label. Bulgarian National Radio reported in 2025 that the building had been repaired in 2022, including work to the exterior, stairs and fence, while also describing continuing discussion about its preservation and future as a tourist site. Open mapping data marks access to the structure as restricted and requiring permission. For a normal traveller, the safe assumption is therefore that the tower is an exterior landmark, not an interior attraction with published admission hours.

That does not make the stop pointless. The tower stands in one of Sofia’s densest historic zones, behind the Central Military Club and near the cathedral precinct, the Holy Synod and St Sophia Church. A 2026 literary-walk programme even uses the Main Astronomical Point at 92 Georgi S. Rakovski Street as a public meeting point, referring to it as the “zero kilometre.” The setting makes the structure easy to encounter while walking between much larger attractions.

Allow about 10 to 20 minutes for the tower itself. The best use of time is to read the plaque, look closely at the octagonal form and then continue to nearby sites rather than expecting exhibits inside. The Monument to the Bulgarian Volunteers stands in the same small green area, while the Central Military Club is immediately adjacent. The Alexander Nevsky Crypt Museum is also close enough to make this scientific landmark a useful short addition to a museum-and-monuments route.

No routine ticket or public interior timetable was found. Because the tower’s grounds and surrounding paths function as public urban space while the building itself is restricted, the seven-day hours field is deliberately left unconfirmed rather than presenting the exterior as a verified 24-hour attraction. Visitors should respect fencing and locked doors and should not interpret the ability to walk around the site as permission to enter the structure.

The Main Astronomical Point is ultimately valuable because it makes an invisible system visible. National maps, borders, engineering projects and infrastructure depended on precise reference networks long before GPS made coordinates seem effortless. This unassuming tower preserves a physical trace of that work in the heart of Sofia. Seen in that context, it is not merely an odd yellow building behind the Military Club but a compact monument to Bulgaria’s scientific measurement of its own territory.

The architecture itself helps explain the original function. The tower is compact and purpose-built rather than ornamental, with a form associated with an observation instrument positioned above a stable reference point. Historical descriptions note a rotating dome used to orient an astronomical theodolite toward celestial targets. Even without entering, understanding that relationship between the fixed ground point, the instrument and the sky makes the exterior easier to read and keeps the visit focused on science rather than treating the building as an unexplained curiosity.

Clear daylight also makes the small exterior plaque easier to examine.
