Banya is a settlement located in Bulgaria’s Panagyurishte Municipality. As of 2007, it had a population of 856. With its mineral springs and wellness resort, the hamlet is well-known across the area. Three kilometers to the south lie the remnants of an old castle.
Banya is located in a hilly location. It is located in the Bata-Banya valley, in the Sredna Gora mountain range. The settlement is bisected by the Banska Luda Yana river, which feeds into the Panagyurska Luda Yana downstream. The nearest villages are the town of Panagyurishte, which serves as the municipality’s administrative center, at 11 kilometers, and the hamlet of Bata, at 5 kilometers. To the south-west lies Bukova Mogila Peak (974 m).
The community is steeped with history. It has been inhabited since the Thracians’ time. A Thracian ruler’s tomb was uncovered, and the treasures are on display at the Village Hall. Banya was the birthplace of one of the April Uprising’s most charismatic personalities, priest Gruyo Banski, as well as his disciples Atanas Kaloyanov and Stoyan Karoleev.
There is a chitalishte, a library, a kindergarten, and an elementary school. With its thermal springs, outdoor and indoor pools, hotel, restaurants, and tavern, Banya offers great recreational opportunities. The population is Christian Orthodox; two churches and a little chapel with magnificent murals are located here.
