The National Polytechnical Museum is a science museum located in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The museum contains around 22,000 pieces in its collection, although only 1,000 of them are constantly exhibited. A library with over 12,000 books and periodicals, as well as an archive with around 2,000 papers, enhance the collections. Time measurement, transportation, photography and film, optics, audio equipment, radio and television, computer equipment, communications equipment, and other exhibits form part of the permanent collection.
History
The National Polytechnical Museum was formed on May 13, 1957, by a resolution of the Bulgarian Council of Ministers, originally under the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. In 1968, it was designated as a national museum.
Since 1992, the museum has been housed in a building that formerly housed Georgi Dimitrov’s museum. It was totally refurbished in 2012 for a total cost of 640,000 lv (326,000 euro). The National Polytechnical Museum takes part in the annual Night of Museums on a yearly basis.
