In addition to the restoration homes, several windmills were also constructed in Nessebar throughout the nineteenth century. The power of the strong winds that blow practically year-round across the little attractive peninsula was harnessed extremely intelligently by the local residents. Currently, three of these windmills have been maintained; one is situated in the center of the isthmus, another on the north shore of the peninsula, and the third at the start of the new part of the city.
Some of them are constructed from stone and are cylindrical in form. They are covered with a conical roof made of wood. Others have a stone bottom floor in the form of a cylinder, above which is a rectangle or square timber chamber. The roof has two pitches. Large wooden vanes always face the direction from where the wind is strongest.
