Old Nessebar
Description
The more than 3,000-year-old site of Nessebar, which is located on a rocky peninsula on the Black Sea, was originally a Thracian village (Menebria). The city was a Greek colony in the start of the sixth century BC. The acropolis, an Apollo temple, an agora, and a wall from the Thracian defences are among the remnants of the city, which are largely from the Hellenistic era. The Stara Mitropolia Basilica and the fortification are two examples of Middle Ages architecture from one of the most significant Byzantine settlements on the west coast of the Black Sea. The 19th-century construction of wooden homes is characteristic of the era’s Black Sea architecture.
