On 23 June 2026, voestalpine formally reopened the exhibition after roughly twenty-three months of work and an investment of about €20 million. The timing matters: anyone relying on older travel articles may still encounter references to temporary closure or plant tours operating without an exhibition. Those details are now obsolete. The new Stahlwelt is open and built around a completely reworked architecture, technology system and interpretive concept.
The centrepiece is called the Grid, a suspended, walk-through steel structure that acts as both architecture and exhibition framework. voestalpine says it contains about 138 tonnes of steel, including forty tonnes from the company’s greentec steel Edition, and is illuminated by around 8,500 individually controllable LED points. Some components were prefabricated as tree-like structures up to thirteen metres tall before installation. The Grid is not simply a spectacular object hung in the middle of the building. It is meant to visualise the idea of a connected global technology company, linking exhibits, digital media and visitor routes across five redesigned levels. The result is very different from the original Stahlwelt’s famous chrome spheres and giant-crucible imagery, even though the underlying mission—making steel production understandable—remains.
The exhibition covers steel production, processing, products and technological applications, but the 2026 redesign places much stronger emphasis on transformation. A major theme is greentec steel, voestalpine’s staged strategy for reducing carbon emissions and moving toward net-zero production. This gives the visitor centre an unavoidable tension. Steel is fundamental to railways, cars, machinery, energy systems and construction, yet conventional steelmaking is highly carbon-intensive. A company-run exhibition naturally presents voestalpine’s own technological strategy, so visitors should treat it as authoritative about what the company is building and planning while remembering that it is not an independent environmental museum. The new format mixes guided and self-paced interpretation. The Experience Tour allows visitors to explore with a multimedia tablet, using animations and background material while guides remain available on exhibition levels for questions. Guided tours offer a more structured explanation. Family programmes combine the exhibition with workshops and experiments, while school formats adapt content to age and vocational interests. The strongest extension is the optional Werkstour, which takes visitors by multimedia bus into the 5.2-square-kilometre production site and closer to real steelmaking installations. That tour turns abstract exhibition content into industrial scale, but it has strict safety requirements and should not be assumed suitable for every visitor.
Plant-tour participants need sturdy closed footwear and sufficient physical fitness for repeated stairs, including sections of up to around ninety steps. The operator says children under six cannot join plant tours, while its current individual-visitor material sets twelve as the minimum for standard individual plant tours and directs younger visitors toward family formats. Participants also need to perceive visual and acoustic warning signals. These rules reflect the fact that the Werkstour enters an operating industrial site rather than a reconstructed demonstration hall. Visitors who cannot meet the requirements can still use the Stahlwelt exhibition without treating the factory tour as compulsory.
Current operating information contains some web-page inconsistencies, so planning deserves care. The German operator page and fresh Linz Tourism listings show Monday through Saturday 09:00–16:00, Sunday and public holidays closed. The English operator page still says 09:00–17:00 and both versions retain some stale renovation wording even while the current homepage and June reopening announcement confirm the new exhibition is operating. Price information also conflicts: the current German operator page lists €14 adult admission including a guided tour from 13 July, while a dated Linz Tourism event listing shows €16. The €29 admission-plus-plant-tour combination is consistent across current sources. Use the official booking engine or Visitor Services if the exact final-hour opening or price matters.
Stahlwelt is not in the historic centre, but public transport is straightforward: from Linz Hauptbahnhof take tram 1 or 2 to Turmstraße, change to bus 25 toward Karlhof and exit at Betriebsgebäude 41, then follow the marked three-minute walk. Free visitor parking is also available. Allow around ninety minutes for the exhibition, about three hours for a combined exhibition and plant tour, and longer for family or specialist programmes. The best reason to visit is not simply to see molten steel or impressive machinery. Stahlwelt makes Linz’s industrial identity legible in the present tense, showing how one of the city’s largest employers explains technology, global production and decarbonisation while the factory continues operating immediately outside.

Construction lasted roughly twenty-three months. The €20 million investment covered architecture, exhibition technology and content. Plant tours continued during the closure from a separate terminal, which is why many web pages from 2024–2025 still describe a period when no exhibition could be visited. The formal reopening on 23 June 2026 ended that phase.
The rebuilt centre is organised across five levels and uses more open sightlines than the former exhibition. Digital content is integrated into the route through tablets and interactive stations. The design aims to replace a sequence of isolated exhibits with one connected spatial system.
For repeat visitors, the change is substantial enough to justify returning. The new Stahlwelt should not be treated as a cosmetic refurbishment of the 2009 attraction. Its central architecture, interpretive emphasis and visitor technologies were all rebuilt around a new corporate narrative.

The optional plant tour is what distinguishes Stahlwelt from a conventional science museum. Multimedia buses take visitors into the voestalpine works, a complex covering about 5.2 square kilometres. Even when specific production areas vary by operational conditions, the scale is the main lesson.
Safety rules are strict because the site remains in production. Sturdy closed shoes are compulsory; sandals, flip-flops and Crocs are explicitly excluded. Clothing that can tolerate dirt is recommended. Participants must follow guides immediately and remain on designated routes.
Physical fitness is also required. The operator warns that stairs of up to around ninety steps must be climbed several times. Participants need to recognise visual and acoustic warning signals. These requirements make the plant tour unsuitable for some visitors even when the exhibition centre itself can be used comfortably.
Age rules differ by programme. Children under six are not allowed on plant tours at all. Current individual-tour material gives twelve as the minimum for standard individual participation and directs younger guests toward family programmes. Families should therefore book the dedicated format rather than assume children can simply join an adult industrial tour.

The separate ZeitgeschichteMUSEUM and why Stahlwelt should not tell only a technology story
A short distance from Stahlwelt is voestalpine’s separate ZeitgeschichteMUSEUM, dedicated to forced labourers at the Linz site of the Nazi-era Reichswerke Hermann Göring. It is administratively connected with the visitor operation but has its own opening hours and free admission. The museum addresses a fundamentally different layer of the industrial site’s history.
This separation is practical but creates a responsibility for visitors. The current steelworks did not emerge from a neutral industrial blank slate. The Nazi regime built massive heavy-industry capacity in Linz, and forced labour formed part of that history. A technology-focused visit can become incomplete if the site’s political origins are ignored.
The contemporary-history museum is currently open Friday afternoons and Saturday in split sessions, with last admission at 15:00. Guided group visits can be arranged on weekdays. Because schedules differ from Stahlwelt, combining both requires deliberate planning rather than assuming one ticket route.
For a serious industrial-history visit, seeing both institutions is highly recommended. Stahlwelt explains what voestalpine produces and how it imagines the future; ZeitgeschichteMUSEUM examines the coercive historical context from which the Linz works emerged. Together they provide a more responsible picture of industrial continuity.
The presence of a dedicated historical museum also demonstrates that corporate heritage can include self-critical material. It should not be treated as an optional footnote to “real” technology. Industry exists inside political and social history, and the Linz site makes that fact unusually visible.

2026 hours, prices, bookings and how to choose the right visitor format
Current operating data requires more care than usual because several voestalpine web pages still retain renovation-era text. The German operator hours page and fresh Linz Tourism date-specific listings show Monday through Saturday 09:00–16:00, Sunday and public holidays closed. The operator’s English hours page still says 09:00–17:00. If your plan depends on arriving after 16:00, confirm with Visitor Services rather than relying on the English page.
Price information also conflicts. The current German operator page states that from 13 July adult Stahlwelt admission including a guided tour costs €14 and reduced admission €12. A fresh Linz Tourism listing for the exhibition shows €16 adult and €14 reduced. The combination of admission, guided tour and plant tour is consistently listed at €29 adult. Use the live booking system for the final price.
The new programme includes Experience Tours, guided tours, family packages and school tours. Summer 2026 has daily tour availability from 13 July, while dated event listings show specific German and English combinations through September. Booking is strongly recommended because tour capacity and factory access are controlled.
Large luggage cannot be stored. Small valuables lockers and a cloakroom for jackets are available. Arrive at least ten minutes before a reserved tour; operator information warns that unclaimed tickets can be released shortly before departure. This is especially important for plant-tour combinations where one late arrival affects an entire group.
Public transport from Hauptbahnhof requires a tram-and-bus transfer but is straightforward. Drivers receive free parking. Allow at least ninety minutes for Stahlwelt alone, around three hours for the plant-tour combination and additional time if adding the ZeitgeschichteMUSEUM. The attraction rewards advance planning more than spontaneous arrival, but the payoff is one of Austria’s strongest opportunities to understand a living industrial complex from both exhibition and production perspectives.
If time is limited, decide before arrival whether the priority is the exhibition or the factory. The exhibition is the more accessible and interpretive option; the Werkstour is the more physical and site-specific one. Combining both is ideal, but choosing deliberately is better than rushing a three-hour industrial visit before another fixed appointment.

A Werkstour on one day may therefore emphasise different views from a tour on another. That variability is part of visiting a working plant rather than a preserved industrial monument.
For Linz, the site has an urban consequence beyond its fences. Generations of employees, suppliers and transport infrastructure helped shape housing, roads and the southern districts. Stahlwelt can explain production directly, but the broader city story becomes clearer when combined with NORDICO or a view from elevated parts of Linz where the industrial landscape can be seen in relation to the Danube and residential areas.

That is a significant form of institutional responsibility, yet the physical separation means visitors focused only on the new technology exhibition can still miss it. Responsible planning should connect the two whenever time allows.
The greentec steel narrative deserves the same careful reading. The exhibition can accurately explain technologies voestalpine is developing and the stages of its decarbonisation plan. Visitors should then understand these as transition commitments and engineering pathways, not as proof that current steel production has already reached net-zero emissions. This distinction allows the exhibition to be appreciated without turning travel writing into corporate advertising.
Guides are valuable precisely because they allow questions that fixed media cannot anticipate. Ask what is already operating, what remains planned, where electricity or hydrogen must come from and which production stages still dominate emissions. Industrial tourism becomes educational when visitors move from spectacle to informed curiosity.
