Adult admission is €13 for a single museum visit. A family ticket for two adults with up to two children under fourteen is €26, children aged six to eighteen pay €3, and children under six enter free. Archduke Johann’s 1811 vision of a public science museum
The Natural History Museum begins with the foundation of the Joanneum in 1811. Archduke Johann had already described his plan in a 1809 letter to his brother, Emperor Franz I. His intention was educational: collections should help young people in Styria learn by making the natural and technical world visible. This Enlightenment ideal placed teaching, research and public access together from the beginning.
The Lesliehof in today’s Raubergasse became the institutional home. The building itself was much older, created in the 1670s as a monastery courtyard for St. Lambrecht Abbey. The Styrian estates acquired it and made it available for Johann’s project. Natural history occupied a central place in the new institution because Johann’s own interests strongly favoured minerals, plants, geology and practical science.
His mineral collection formed one of the most important foundations. It consisted of several thousand specimens and provided material for teaching as well as display. Friedrich Mohs became the first professor of mineralogy and curator. Mohs’s later international fame for the scale that ranks minerals by scratch hardness gives Graz a direct connection with a scientific concept still taught worldwide.
Botany developed as another pillar. The Joanneum maintained a botanical garden not merely for beauty but for teaching, research and plant exchange. By the mid-nineteenth century curators even attempted to cultivate a living “Flora styriaca” representing all plant species found in Styria. The 2013 reopening and the logic of the permanent exhibition
The current public museum is the result of a major reorganization. Research collections, laboratories and study facilities moved to the Centre of Natural History in Graz-Andritz from 2009, allowing the Lesliehof and adjoining museum spaces to be redesigned primarily for visitors. Climate Change in Styria and the six-metre relief model
“Climate Change in Styria,” opened in December 2025, brings a present-day environmental issue into direct dialogue with the museum’s long view of natural change. The exhibition does not treat climate as an abstract global statistic. It focuses on how projected temperature, precipitation and storm patterns may affect the area of present-day Styria.
Consequences include changes in forest cover, the spread of invasive organisms and the movement of disease-carrying species. These subjects make climate change tangible because they connect with landscapes, plants and animals that visitors may know from hiking, agriculture or urban life. The exhibition also includes recommendations for action rather than stopping at diagnosis.
The most distinctive interpretive tool is the Styrian relief. Measuring roughly six by six metres at a scale of 1:37,500, it represents Styria in remarkable detail and also includes parts of present-day Slovenia that historically formed Lower Styria. Modern projection technology can overlay georeferenced data onto the model.
This turns the relief from a static topographic object into a dynamic visualization surface.
