A free interactive science centre invites teenagers and adults to build, test, code and experiment across technology, medicine, sustainability and money.

CoSA – Center of Science Activities is the hands-on science centre in Graz’s Joanneumsviertel, operated by Universalmuseum Joanneum in cooperation with the Graz Children’s Museum FRida & freD. Open since 19 October 2019, it was designed primarily for young people aged twelve and over, although curious adults and families also use the spaces. The core rule is the opposite of a traditional display museum: “please touch” instead of “do not touch.” Visitors build, test, simulate, solve, programme and experiment with ideas from engineering, medicine, sustainability, mobility, physics and financial literacy. Admission to the CoSA itself is free in 2026, which makes it one of the strongest-value indoor attractions in Graz. Paid extras such as the Escape Room and some science programmes are optional rather than required for a substantial visit.

CoSA sits below the Joanneumsviertel, the museum quarter that also contains Neue Galerie Graz, the BRUSEUM, the Natural History Museum and the Styrian State Library. The science centre was conceived jointly by KIMUS Graz, the operator behind FRida & freD, and Universalmuseum Joanneum. Its development involved scientists and specialists from the University of Graz, Graz University of Technology, Medical University of Graz, FH Joanneum and other institutions. That collaborative structure is reflected in the visitor experience: the centre is less interested in presenting a finished body of scientific facts than in letting visitors move from a question toward experimentation, failure, redesign and discussion.

The visitor-facing plan currently groups the experience into a dozen main areas, although separate press material has used a count of thirteen depending on how changing programmes are classified. The exact number matters less than the variety. CoSA_Technology asks visitors to develop a vehicle and think about components, bionics and mobility. Energy and Sustainability areas turn future-resource questions into games. MedLab and human-focused stations introduce medicine and the body. DIY offers making and coding. Visions moves between deep sea, space and speculative future scenarios. Community provides a place to rest, discuss careers and meet partner organisations. Temporary exhibitions and financial-education areas change the mix over time.

The 2026 programme has become especially strong around money and decision-making. FLiP at CoSA, opened in 2025, uses interactive stations to explore financial fitness, household budgets, value and responsible money use and is scheduled through 3 May 2027. “Note the Difference,” running through 1 January 2027, looks at coins, notes and other means of payment. These programmes sit alongside the science-and-technology core rather than replacing it. In September 2026 the DIY programme also includes “Smart Home,” where visitors use upcycled materials and micro:bits to create and programme a model room. This continual turnover is one reason repeat visits make sense.

CoSA also uses the historic show mine beneath the Joanneumsviertel for an Escape Room called “Exit the Mine.” The current main page lists weekend sessions at 13:00 and 16:30. The Escape Room is a separate paid experience booked online for groups of two to six and currently costs €119 per group. Science shows, workshops and other facilitated programmes can carry smaller extra fees. None of these extras is necessary to enter the main CoSA zones: regular admission remains free, and visitors do not need a time slot for ordinary exploration.

The current opening schedule is Tuesday through Sunday and public holidays from 10:00 to 18:00, with Monday closed. There are specific 2026 exceptions: the museum is exceptionally closed on 20 September and on 24 and 25 December, while 26 October is listed as an additional opening day. These exceptions matter because an evergreen “Tuesday–Sunday” summary would otherwise send visitors to a locked door on 20 September 2026. Most travellers should allow at least two hours. The centre’s own room guidance often recommends thirty to forty-five minutes for individual zones, so a curious teenager can easily spend a half-day if several areas are explored deeply.

Accessibility is unusually well documented. A level entrance is located on the western side of Joanneumsviertel through the passage toward Lesliehof; an automatic door leads to the lift and is suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Accessible parking is available in Kalchberggasse. The centre also publishes sensory guidance describing which areas can be loud, bright, crowded or dim, allowing neurodivergent visitors and families to plan more comfortably. These details are especially useful because a hands-on science centre can be more sensory-intensive than a conventional museum even when physical access is excellent.

Public transport is simple. Tram lines 1, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 stop at Hauptplatz–Congress, followed by a short walk toward Schmiedgasse and Joanneumsviertel. Central parking garages are available, but the old-town location makes tram or walking the easiest options. The surrounding museum cluster also makes CoSA efficient on rainy days: families can combine the science centre with the Natural History Museum or Neue Galerie without crossing the city.

The best way to visit is to resist the urge to rush through every station. Choose three or four themes that genuinely interest the group, complete the activities rather than just pressing buttons and leave time for one facilitated programme if it fits. The target age of twelve and over is meaningful: many tasks assume curiosity about systems, design and decision-making rather than only simple play. Younger children can still enjoy parts of CoSA with adult help, but families seeking a museum built specifically around preschool and primary-age play should compare it with FRida & freD. CoSA’s strength is different: it gives teenagers permission to behave like designers and researchers instead of passive museum visitors.

Why Graz built a science centre for teenagers

CoSA opened in October 2019 after a development process shared by Universalmuseum Joanneum and KIMUS Graz. The target audience was deliberately unusual. Many science museums are designed either for schoolchildren or for adults, while teenagers can feel too old for children’s play spaces and too young for highly academic museum presentation. CoSA was built around that gap.

The mission statement emphasises independent exploration, playful experimentation, curiosity, creative thinking and solution-oriented action. Scientific facts remain important, but the centre wants visitors to experience how knowledge is used. This is why many stations ask users to make choices, build prototypes or test consequences rather than read a panel and move on.

The development involved researchers, engineers, medical professionals, educators and youth-culture specialists. Participation from universities and applied-science institutions gave the centre access to real expertise, while collaboration with FRida & freD brought experience in interactive learning. The result is a science centre inside a museum institution but with the behaviour of a workshop.

By June 2024 CoSA had welcomed its 100,000th visitor since opening. That milestone demonstrates that the concept became more than a short-lived experiment and supports the current 2026 expansion into financial education and additional changing programmes.

For travellers, the institutional background explains why CoSA is best visited actively. Staff and exhibition design assume that visitors will touch, try, fail and talk. Quiet observation is possible, but it leaves much of the attraction unused.

CoSA’s free-admission policy also changes how teenagers can use the institution. A young visitor can return to one or two favourite areas without the pressure of “getting value” from a large ticket price, and local families can use changing programmes repeatedly. This supports the centre’s emphasis on self-directed learning: visitors can follow curiosity instead of treating the experience as a one-time guided curriculum.

Technology, medicine, energy and making

CoSA_Technology turns vehicle design into a sequence of decisions. Visitors assemble a concept from components, consider mobility needs and explore bionics, the process of borrowing ideas from nature for technical innovation. The zone makes the failure-and-redesign cycle visible instead of presenting engineering as a straight path from idea to product.

Energy and sustainability stations ask how systems can be changed rather than treating environmental problems only as warnings. Interactive tasks connect consumption, resources and technical choices. This action-oriented approach suits the centre’s goal of making future challenges understandable without becoming a lecture.

Medical and human-focused areas move into the body, research and healthcare. The centre’s original development included advice from Graz’s Medical University and clinical specialists. Simulations and hands-on tasks are designed to reveal how observation, diagnosis and technology interact.

DIY is one of the most flexible areas. Visitors can build, programme and work with materials under changing themes. In September 2026 the “Smart Home” programme combines model-making with micro:bit coding and small electronic components, linking craft with digital control.

Visions expands the scale again, moving toward space, deep-sea exploration and imagined future environments. The value is not prediction but permission to speculate: what technologies could be needed, which human problems follow us into new environments and what responsibilities come with exploration?

The different rooms deliberately vary in sensory character and pacing. Technology can be busy and noisy, while Community is intended as a place to pause and exchange ideas. Some spaces rely on physical construction, others on screens, simulation or discussion. This variety matters for learning because not every visitor engages with science through the same mode; building, observing, debating and coding can all lead into the same underlying concepts.

FLiP and the new financial-literacy layer

FLiP at CoSA added financial literacy to the centre in May 2025. The programme uses interactive stations to ask what money is, how household budgets work, what “financial fitness” means and how personal choices interact with larger economic systems. It is aimed especially at visitors aged twelve and over, matching CoSA’s overall audience.

The topic fits the science-centre method because financial literacy benefits from simulation. Instead of memorising definitions, visitors make choices and see consequences. Budgeting becomes a system with trade-offs, while value and money are treated as social and historical constructions rather than only arithmetic.

“Note the Difference,” running from October 2025 through 1 January 2027, adds a more object-focused look at coins, notes and alternative means of payment. It bridges CoSA’s interactive approach with the broader collecting expertise of Universalmuseum Joanneum.

The financial programme also broadens the centre’s relevance. A teenager who is less interested in mechanical engineering may engage strongly with money, careers or household decisions. CoSA becomes less a “technology museum” and more a place for understanding systems that affect everyday life.

The exhibitions change, so travellers returning after 2027 should recheck what remains. The permanent strength is the method of interactive learning, not the promise that every current 2026 module will remain indefinitely.

Financial education also creates opportunities for intergenerational discussion. Teenagers may be encountering bank accounts, work income and independent spending for the first time, while adults bring their own experience of rent, debt, saving and household costs. Interactive stations can therefore become prompts for conversation rather than tests with one correct personal answer. That social dimension fits CoSA’s broader Community philosophy.

Escape Room, science shows and facilitated programmes

The historic show mine under Joanneumsviertel provides the setting for the “Exit the Mine” Escape Room. Current weekend sessions are listed at 13:00 and 16:30. Participants solve puzzles connected with raw materials and resources, turning the mine from a passive historic feature into a problem-solving environment.

The Escape Room costs €119 per group of two to six and must be booked online. That price is separate from the free main centre and is best understood as a premium group activity rather than part of ordinary admission. Visitors who do not book it still receive the full interactive science-centre experience.

Science shows and workshops create another layer. Some are open drop-in activities, while others require registration or a small extra ticket. Current examples include coding, DIY and financial programmes. The calendar is worth checking before travel because the best facilitated activity may determine which day is most rewarding.

Groups and school classes are encouraged to book programmes in advance. Independent visitors do not need a regular time slot. This distinction makes spontaneous family visits easy while preserving structure for organised education.

If time is limited, prioritise the free zones first and add one paid or scheduled activity only when it matches the group’s interests. CoSA works well without extras and should not be approached as an attraction where the best experiences are hidden behind add-on fees.

Accessibility and sensory planning

The level entrance to Joanneumsviertel is on the western side of the square through the Lesliehof passage. An automatic door leads to a lift down to the foyer and CoSA level. The route is suitable for wheelchair users and visitors with pushchairs. Accessible parking is available in Kalchberggasse.

The centre also provides unusually practical sensory information. Individual rooms are described in terms such as loud, bright, dim, crowded or calmer. This allows visitors to anticipate stimulation and choose breaks. A Community area provides one of the calmer places to pause.

Because hands-on stations can create queues and noise, quieter visitors may prefer weekday mornings outside school-group peaks. The official opening hours do not guarantee equal crowd levels across the day.

The accessible layout makes CoSA a strong wet-weather option for mixed-age groups and visitors with mobility needs, but sensory needs should still be planned. Physical access and sensory comfort are different questions, and the museum’s published guidance helps address both.

Visitors who are sensitive to noise can use the published sensory map to plan a route that alternates intense rooms with calmer ones. Bringing headphones or ear protection can be useful for some families, especially during school-group periods. The centre’s accessibility information treats sensory load as part of practical access rather than assuming that ramps and lifts alone make an interactive museum comfortable for everyone.

Hours, transport and a realistic visit strategy

Regular 2026 opening is Tuesday through Sunday and public holidays from 10:00 to 18:00. Monday is closed. Exceptionally, CoSA is closed on 20 September and 24–25 December, and it is additionally open on 26 October. Admission to CoSA is free.

Allow two hours for a first visit and three or more for teenagers who engage deeply. The centre itself publishes recommended times for many rooms, and a forty-five-minute Technology zone is easy to spend if visitors complete tasks rather than skim them.

Families with younger children should decide whether CoSA or FRida & freD better matches the day. CoSA’s stated primary audience begins at twelve; younger children can participate, but the centre is strongest when visitors can reason through design and system challenges independently.

The Natural History Museum and Neue Galerie share the Joanneumsviertel complex, so a full rainy-day museum plan can stay almost entirely under one roof. CoSA’s free entry makes it especially easy to use as the flexible centrepiece of that day.

A useful rainy-day sequence is CoSA first, Natural History Museum second and then a short break in the Joanneumsviertel foyer or nearby old town. CoSA is mentally active and hands-on, while the Natural History Museum allows slower object-based viewing. Alternating the two styles can prevent museum fatigue, especially with teenagers who become restless in long conventional galleries.

Because the main admission is free, there is no penalty for leaving before exhaustion. A focused ninety-minute visit can still be excellent if the group chooses only a few zones, and a second visit can cover the rest. This flexibility is particularly valuable for teenagers whose interest rises sharply when they control the pace and subject of exploration.
