Estany Esbalçat in Ordino, Andorra

Estany Esbalçat is a small high-mountain lake reached by a marked hiking route from El Castellar on the CG-3 road toward Ordino Arcalís. It is a more compact objective than the famous Tristaina lakes and works well for visitors who want a genuine alpine walk without committing to the much longer Angonella or summit routes. The official trail is graded moderate and climbs from the Castellar cabins through the Comís Vell valley, passing streams, wooden bridges, waterfalls and mountain-pine forest before a steeper final traverse reaches the lake. The main limitation is altitude: although the published distance is short, the path reaches well above 2,000 metres and is strongly seasonal.

The route begins around kilometre 20 of the CG-3, in the area called El Castellar, before the Ordino Arcalís resort. Visit Andorra directs hikers to the Pont del Castellar and then along a forest track for about 200 metres to two shepherds’ huts. Those huts and the nearby information panels are the practical trailhead. An official route guide gives the starting coordinates at approximately 42°37.996'N, 1°30.688'E, placing the departure beside the Cabanes de la Pleta del Castellar.

The lower section follows a dry-stone wall with the Riu del Comís Vell close by. Hikers pass a first wooden bridge without crossing, continue to a second bridge near a waterfall, and cross there. A smaller cascade appears soon after. The path then moves away from the stream and climbs through mountain pine to a broad clearing. This is the key junction for the lake route; from here the line turns left and climbs diagonally beneath the crag before looping up the steeper final slope to Estany Esbalçat.

Visit Andorra currently lists the hike as moderate, with 1.79 km, about +415/-415 metres and a duration category of up to three hours. An older official topographic sheet describes approximately 1.79 km to the lake and a 1 hour 30 minute ascent. Those figures suggest that a normal out-and-back visit should be treated as roughly two to three hours rather than a one-hour outing, especially if time is allowed at the water or waterfalls. As with many mountain routes, published distance conventions can differ between one-way and route-summary formats, so planning by elapsed time and elevation is safer than relying on one number.

The lake itself is the reward rather than a developed recreation area. There is no staffed visitor centre at the water, no café and no entrance gate. The setting is quieter and simpler than the infrastructure around Ordino Arcalís. That is a strength for hikers seeking a compact natural excursion, but it also means visitors should carry what they need and avoid expecting benches, toilets or food service at the destination. The water and surrounding ground should be treated as a natural alpine environment rather than a swimming or picnic facility with managed safety.

Season matters. Visit Andorra recommends that routes above 1,700 metres be undertaken mainly from the end of June to the end of September, while noting that suitable weather and ground conditions can extend the practical period from May to October. Snow patches, wet ground and cold conditions can remain after the valley has already entered spring, and autumn weather can shorten the safe window quickly. The short mileage should not encourage visitors to ignore a poor forecast or unsuitable footwear.

Road access to El Castellar is normally the most convenient way to reach the trailhead, but high-road conditions should be checked before departure. Parking should be limited to legitimate roadside or trailhead areas without obstructing resort and mountain traffic. There are no fixed pedestrian opening hours for the route. A daylight start with enough time to descend before dark is more relevant than any nominal schedule, and visitors should check current road and weather information when snow or storms are possible.

Estany Esbalçat is particularly suitable for travellers based in Ordino who want a half-day mountain walk with varied scenery. It can also complement a broader Ordino Arcalís day, but it is better approached as its own hike rather than squeezed between lift-based attractions. The route’s waterfalls and forest give it interest before the lake is reached, which means turning around early because of weather is not a completely wasted excursion. Hikers seeking a more strenuous day can choose Angonella; those seeking a largely lift-assisted panorama may prefer the Tristaina Solar Viewpoint.

The strongest reason to choose Esbalçat is balance. It has enough climbing and alpine terrain to feel like a mountain outing, yet the official route is much shorter than Ordino’s major summit days. In stable summer conditions, two to three hours is a sensible window for most prepared hikers. Outside that window of good conditions, the correct response is not to depend on the route’s “moderate” label but to reassess snow, visibility and footing before leaving El Castellar.
