It is best suited to hikers who are comfortable with sustained ascent, rough mountain paths and a full half-day or longer away from village services. The reward is not a built attraction but an increasingly remote Pyrenean landscape: forest gives way to higher open ground, the Angonella refuge appears before the lakes, and the three waters are reached in sequence. The decisive limitation is effort. Official Ordino and Andorra tourism sources classify the route as difficult and publish roughly 1,000 metres of climbing, so this is not a casual lakeside stroll.

The standard approach begins in Llorts, a small village north of Ordino. Visit Andorra places the start beside the Romanesque church of Sant Serni de Llorts, while VisitOrdino describes the same departure through the village toward the Bordes de la Mollera. This makes the trail unusually easy to identify at its lower end even though the destination itself is remote. The first kilometres climb through red and then black pine forest. Higher up, the path passes traditional mountain structures and the Mollera cabins, reminders that these slopes were worked long before hiking became their main recreational use. Ferrous watercourses and dry-stone features also connect the walk to the iron-working landscape that defines much of northern Ordino.

Published route figures vary slightly between the two official tourism sources. VisitOrdino lists about 4.9 km, around 1,010 metres of ascent and roughly six hours, while Visit Andorra lists 5.45 km, +1,015 metres and a duration exceeding six hours. These differences are a good reason to plan by terrain and time rather than by a single exact number. Both authorities agree on the essential point: the route is difficult and long. For a visitor planning a conventional out-and-back day, allowing at least six hours of moving and stopping time is prudent, with additional margin for weather, navigation, photographs and rest.

The Angonella refuge is reached before the lakes and sits at roughly 2,200 metres. VisitOrdino describes it as a small mountain shelter with space for six people. It is useful as a landmark and emergency-style shelter, but it should not be treated like a staffed refuge with guaranteed meals, reservations or services. From this upper basin the three lakes appear gradually across the cirque. The sense of progression is one of the route’s strengths: instead of reaching one viewpoint and turning around, hikers move deeper into a coherent high-mountain landscape framed by ridges and summits.

The route is marked with yellow dots and forms part of the wider network of Andorran mountain paths. Marking does not remove the need for normal mountain judgment. Cloud, lingering snow, wet rock and afternoon storms can make a familiar line harder to follow or less safe. Visit Andorra recommends doing routes above 1,700 metres from the end of June to the end of September; it notes that the practical season may extend from May to October when weather and ground conditions allow. That guidance matters here because almost the entire upper half of the excursion lies well above the threshold.

There is no admission charge for the lakes or the trail, and there are no staffed visitor hours. The useful planning question is therefore not “when does it open?” but whether daylight, weather, snow and trail conditions make the outing sensible. Starting early is particularly valuable because of the length and height gain. Hikers should carry sufficient food and water rather than relying on natural streams, and should take clothing appropriate for rapid temperature changes. The route’s remoteness also means that turning back early in deteriorating conditions is a better choice than treating the lakes as a fixed objective that must be reached.

Access by public road is straightforward as far as Llorts on the CG-3 corridor through the Ordino valley, but the hike itself begins on foot in the village. The church of Sant Serni de Llorts is a practical reference point for the trailhead. Visitors arriving by car should use legitimate village parking and avoid blocking narrow local access. Those without a car can use the valley’s public-transport corridor to reach the northern villages, but timetables should be checked for the actual date because frequencies can change. Once on the mountain, there is no transport shortcut back to Llorts; the ordinary visit is an out-and-back commitment.

Estanys de l’Angonella works especially well for travellers who want one substantial mountain day rather than a sequence of short roadside viewpoints. It also gives useful context for the parish of Ordino: the route links a lived-in village, Romanesque heritage, former agricultural structures, iron-rich waterways, forest and alpine terrain in one continuous ascent. Hikers looking for a much easier outing should choose a lower route or a lake with shorter access rather than underestimating Angonella because the destination is described simply as “lakes.”

A sensible visit ends back in Llorts, where the contrast between the compact village and the high cirque makes the scale of the climb clear. The church, the Iron Route and other Ordino heritage stops can be combined with the day only if energy and daylight allow; they are better treated as optional additions, not obligations after a long hike. For prepared hikers in stable summer conditions, Estanys de l’Angonella offers one of Ordino’s strongest combinations of physical challenge and relatively undeveloped mountain scenery. For everyone else, the route’s published difficulty and ascent should be taken literally.
