Refugi de Montmalús is a free, unguarded mountain shelter beside the Estany de Montmalús, high at the Collada de Montmalús in Encamp parish. The refuge stands at about 2,445 metres, below the pass and within the rugged Grau Roig mountain landscape. Many hikers encounter it on the same outing as the lake, but the shelter is a distinct destination: it offers basic refuge and a possible overnight stop, not staffed accommodation or commercial services.

The hut is listed open all year by the Government and FAM. It has a fireplace, table and benches; the Government also notes a stove and water nearby. There is no guardian, restaurant, reservation system or guaranteed bed. Carry food, a sleeping bag, warm clothing, headlamp and enough drinking water or a treatment method. Nearby water is not necessarily potable or flowing in all seasons. Capacity varies across current listings: FAM gives ten places, while the Government register and Visit Andorra’s 2026 map list eight. Plan conservatively for a small shelter with eight dependable places and be ready to leave if it is full.

The most direct documented access starts at the Cubil car park in the Grandvalira Grau Roig sector, around 1,950 metres. The official 5.36-kilometre route climbs south along the Montmalús ski slope, following the line of the chairlift. It passes the small Estany de Coma Estremera and continues to the lake and refuge at the pass. Visit Andorra reports roughly 604 metres of ascent and 258 metres of descent for the itinerary, rated moderate. The listed duration is inconsistently rendered as more than six hours or more than one day on the route page, so use distance and elevation rather than relying on that duration field. Return by the same route unless following a separately planned high-mountain traverse.

The route starts within a ski area, but should not automatically be treated as a winter piste walk or a lift-access visit. In summer, the ski slope provides a clear corridor but remains a steep mountain ascent. In winter, active ski operations, snow cover, avalanche conditions and resort rules may affect access. Confirm whether walkers may use the relevant terrain and whether the lift or parking is operating; the refuge itself is not a staffed ski lodge. Visit Andorra recommends trips above 1,700 metres mainly from late June to late September, extending the season only when weather and ground conditions allow.

The pass is an attractive destination in its own right. It sits at approximately 2,704 metres, above the lake basin, where slopes open toward the surrounding high ridges. The route’s intermediate Estany de Coma Estremera gives the climb a natural pause before the final ascent. The terrain combines ski infrastructure below with alpine pasture, rock and water near the pass. Conditions can change quickly with cloud or storms, and even a moderate-rated route requires suitable footwear, sun and wind protection, navigation and enough daylight for the return. The lake and hut are not evidence that the pass will be safe to cross in every season.

Refugi de Montmalús is also a waypoint on longer routes. The GRP Andorra stage from Refugi de l’Illa crosses the Pessons high country and descends toward Refugi del Pla de les Pedres. Other routes connect Grau Roig with the lake basin, Collada de Montmalús and Portella Blanca d’Andorra. These longer itineraries vary substantially in difficulty and may continue over exposed passes or cross-border terrain. They should not be combined with the 5.36-kilometre out-and-back figures; consult a dedicated track for each planned stage, especially if using a lift or returning by a different valley.

No regular staffed opening hours apply to the shelter. The all-year listing describes the facility’s status, while its practical usability depends on route conditions and whether the small hut is free. Government information says maintenance of Andorra’s unguarded refuges is generally done in summer, so expect less reliable cleanliness or supplies outside that period. The fireplace should be used only where safe and in accordance with fire restrictions; do not assume wood is stocked. Take all rubbish down and leave the interior ready for other walkers.

For an overnight, check the forecast, ground conditions and any Grandvalira access notices before setting out. Bring warm layers even on a sunny day, water and food for a delay, offline navigation and a backup plan if the hut is occupied. Winter access requires experience and equipment appropriate to snow and avalanche conditions; the Government’s year-round listing is not a winter safety recommendation. Keep a conservative turnaround time, particularly when cloud could obscure the pass or daylight is limited.

The refuge is most rewarding for hikers who want to spend more time in the Montmalús basin or use a basic shelter as part of a planned high route. It gives the Estany de Montmalús outing an overnight option and a protected pause near the pass, while remaining modest and unstaffed. Visitors should use the existing lake article for the route overview and a separate refuge page for facilities, capacity and overnight expectations. Treat the hut as a shared resource, not accommodation that can be counted on without a fallback.
