Pic de l’Aspra is a 2,693-metre summit in the high country above Els Cortals d’Encamp, in Encamp parish. It belongs to the rugged ridge landscape linking Alt del Griu, the Ensagents area and the Pessons highlands. The top is described as a pile of large granite blocks, a character that sets it apart from the smoother slopes and meadows lower in the valley. The name can appear as Pic d’Aspra in maps and route descriptions. It is a separate summit from Pic d’Ensagents, Alt del Griu and the Refugi d’Ensagents, each of which is a different waypoint in the same broader mountain region.
The usual access begins at Els Cortals d’Encamp, reached by the CS-220 road. A trail climbs through the Bosc del Campeà and over open slopes toward the Ensagents lakes and refuge. From the refuge, a route continues toward Alt del Griu before traversing the high ground to Pic de l’Aspra. The return may descend by the Pedrusques or link back to the Cortals approach. This is a mountain circuit rather than a direct, low-effort path. Some route accounts describe navigation becoming less obvious on the ridge and during the descent through forest, especially where tracks fade. The summit itself sits above the main marked valley itinerary, and visitors need to identify the correct branch and return route.
A documented outing combining Alt del Griu and Pic de l’Aspra takes about five hours and ten minutes of moving time, with a high total ascent. It is graded difficult or high because of physical effort and the route-finding needed on the ridge, rather than a single technical climbing pitch. The granite-block summit and the connecting terrain may nevertheless require careful foot placement. Those statistics describe one circuit and should not be transferred to every start point or route variation. From Cortals, route length changes depending on whether hikers include Ensagents lakes, Alt del Griu, Pic de l’Aspra or a return through Pedrusques. Carry a map and allow extra time if the ridge is clouded or the tracks are hard to follow.
The setting is a contrast of glacial basins, alpine lakes and high rocky crests. Lower on the approach, paths pass through forest and pastoral clearings. Above the refuge, the landscape opens into the headwaters of the Ensagents valley, with lakes tucked below steep slopes and ridges. At the top, the large granite blocks provide a natural vantage across Encamp’s high country. Nearby ridgelines lead toward Alt del Griu and Pic dels Pessons, while lower views descend toward Els Cortals. There are no built viewpoints, lift terminals or staffed facilities at the summit. The experience is one of moving through a high Pyrenean landscape, with the refuge and lakes offering useful pauses along the way.
The approach is also a good example of how a valley walk gradually becomes a genuine alpine route. Below the refuge, the forest provides some shade and a clear sense of direction. Higher up, tracks spread across more open slopes, and the large blocks around the summit interrupt an otherwise broad skyline. The refuge and lakes make useful intermediate goals for parties who decide that the ridge is beyond their day’s ability. Turning around at one of these points still gives a rewarding experience of the Ensagents basin without requiring an uncertain descent from the upper ridge.
Pic de l’Aspra suits fit hikers with experience on uneven alpine ground and the ability to navigate beyond a continuous marked path. The route can be long and tiring, and the unclear final ridge/descent sections make it less suitable for visitors who rely only on signs. Wear sturdy footwear and bring sufficient water, food, warm and waterproof layers, sun protection, a headlamp and an offline topographic map. The refuge is separate from the summit and should not be assumed staffed or stocked. A route linking Alt del Griu and Aspra requires a full-day plan, not simply a short detour after visiting the refuge.
Summer and early autumn are generally the most practical seasons for a dry hiking route. Snow can persist on shaded slopes into late spring or early summer, and the ridge is exposed to thunderstorms and strong winds. In winter, snow changes the terrain and may require mountaineering equipment and avalanche assessment. The access road may also be affected by snow or maintenance. Check the forecast and local route notices before leaving Cortals, and use a turnaround time if clouds approach. If the trail becomes indistinct, return to the last known waypoint instead of descending through unknown forest or gullies.
Pic de l’Aspra has no opening hours or ticketed access. It is natural terrain accessed by foot from the Encamp mountain routes. The CS-220 road, the refuge and the trails are separate amenities with their own seasonal conditions. No staffed service or reliable water source is available on the summit. Hikers who prefer a shorter day can visit the Ensagents lakes or refuge and return without continuing to the ridge. Anyone aiming for Aspra should plan the summit and descent as part of one route, respect the protected mountain environment and carry all rubbish back down.
