Funicamp is the high-capacity mountain lift that links the town of Encamp with the Solanelles area of Grandvalira, turning a steep ascent into a roughly 25-minute ride to more than 2,500 metres. Grandvalira describes it as the longest funitel in Europe, and its appeal is as much scenic as functional: hikers, skiers, families and mountain visitors can use it to move quickly from the valley floor into high-altitude terrain. The decisive limitation is seasonality. As of 15 September 2026, the published summer operation has already ended, while the 2026–27 winter resort season is scheduled to start on 4 December, subject to snow and weather conditions.

During its summer 2026 season, Funicamp operated from 11 July through 8 September, from 10:00 to 16:00 with the final ascent at 15:00. That period is useful for understanding the lift as more than ski infrastructure. The upper station at Solanelles opens onto walking and mountain-biking routes, guided activities and panoramic viewpoints. The cable-car ride itself crosses the Cortals valley, giving a rapid sense of the vertical scale of Encamp’s mountain landscape before visitors even start an excursion.

The summer ticket structure also makes clear that Funicamp can be used simply as a scenic ride. In 2026, Grandvalira listed a €16 pedestrian return fare and an €11 one-way ascent. A combined return ticket with the 4x4 bus to the Orri del Cubil cost €22 at the ticket office. Children under five could ride free with proof of age. Dogs were permitted in the cabins provided they were clean, while cyclists needed a Bike Pass rather than a standard pedestrian ticket. These prices describe the 2026 summer product and should not be assumed to apply to winter or a future season.

From Solanelles, the lift becomes a gateway rather than the destination. The summer programme included a 4x4 connection toward Lake Cubil and the Orri del Cubil, a traditional pastoral structure that adds cultural context to the high-mountain landscape. Grandvalira also promoted mountain-biking circuits, high-mountain fishing sessions, access toward the Clots de l’Aspra via ferrata, and food at the Solanelles restaurant. The operator’s new “Elevated Footprints” bear sculpture at the upper station connects the setting to Encamp’s traditional Ball de l’Ossa, a local bear-dance tradition recognised within UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage framework.

In winter, Funicamp returns to its original role as a major access lift for the Encamp sector of Grandvalira. The resort’s published 2026–27 season is scheduled from 4 December 2026 to 4 April 2027, with general slope hours from 09:00 to 17:00. Opening and closing dates are explicitly weather-dependent. Visitors planning a winter ride without skiing should check the current pedestrian-pass conditions, because access products and operational arrangements differ from the summer scenic ticket.

Arrival logistics are unusually convenient for a mountain lift. Grandvalira states that the Funicamp facilities have a covered car park with capacity for 500 vehicles plus an outdoor car park; both use daily rates. That makes the Encamp base practical for drivers who do not want to continue up the CG-2 toward higher ski sectors. The operator does not currently publish enough detail on the Funicamp page to verify a complete step-free route from car park to cabin and upper station, so travellers with mobility requirements should contact Grandvalira before buying a ticket rather than assume that a modern lift is fully accessible at every transfer point.

How long to allow depends entirely on the purpose of the visit. For a simple ride up, a look around Solanelles and a return, about 90 minutes to two hours is a reasonable planning estimate once boarding and waiting time are included. Add several hours if using a trail, the 4x4 excursion or a guided mountain activity. Mountain weather can change faster than conditions in the valley, so clothing and footwear should match the altitude even when Encamp itself feels warm.

The between-season period is important to understand. On 15 September 2026 there is no published daily sightseeing service: the summer season ended on 8 September, and the winter schedule has not yet begun. This is not evidence that Funicamp is closed permanently; it is a normal seasonal gap. Anyone travelling in autumn should therefore treat the lift as unavailable unless Grandvalira announces a special opening or revised schedule.

Funicamp works especially well as part of a broader Encamp day. The National Automobile Museum provides an indoor contrast before or after the mountain, while the upper area connects naturally to the Orri del Cubil and other Cortals routes. In practical terms, it is one of the clearest places in Andorra to experience how quickly the country moves from a lived-in valley town to ski and hiking terrain above 2,500 metres.

One further planning point is that the lift’s role changes with the season. In summer the journey can be the activity itself; in winter it is primarily an access system into the ski domain. That distinction affects queues, clothing, ticket choice and how much time to reserve.
