Andorra Turisme places the start after the church of Sant Jaume dels Cortals. Roughly 500 metres beyond a bend, hikers reach a borda and a wooden sign for the Ensagents path. The trail enters black-pine forest, climbs through clearings and follows the Ensagents route before diverging. The published route describes crossing a stream and traversing stony ground toward a small col from which the lake is reached. Stone cairns help with orientation, but the description itself makes clear that the final approach is less obvious than the earlier marked path.

The lake sits around 2,380 metres in the Ensagents mountain system. Open mapping places it in Encamp, close to the Refugi d'Ensagents and the ridges around the Gargantillar and Pessons area. That setting explains why the hike feels more remote than its starting point on the Cortals road might suggest. Once above the forest, the surrounding rock walls and ridges become a large part of the experience, with the lake functioning as a destination within a broader glacial landscape rather than as a developed recreation site.

The official route page gives a one-way distance of about 3.55 km, around 470 metres of ascent and published times of roughly three hours up and two hours forty-five minutes down. Those numbers are best treated as planning references rather than promises. Route-finding, wet ground, pauses, fitness and seasonal conditions can all change the real duration. A sensible plan is to reserve most of a day, especially if you intend to continue toward the Ensagents refuge or combine Moreno with other lakes.

Equipment should match a mountain outing. Hiking footwear, water, food, sun protection and weather layers are basic needs, and a downloaded track or reliable map is particularly useful because the final turn is not as obvious as the main Ensagents path. The route crosses areas where water is present, but natural streams should not be assumed safe for drinking without treatment. Mobile coverage and rescue response should also never be treated as guaranteed in mountain terrain.

Seasonality is important even though the route page does not impose a gate or ticketed period. Snow, ice and saturated ground can persist at this altitude long after conditions in Encamp feel mild. The trailhead area on the Cortals road is the practical arrival point, not the lake itself, and parking conditions can vary. Sant Jaume dels Cortals is a useful landmark for locating the start and also makes a natural short cultural stop before or after the hike if access is appropriate.

Accessibility is limited by definition. Reaching Estany Moreno involves an uneven mountain trail, prolonged ascent, stream crossing and stony sections, so it is not a step-free attraction. Families with young children should judge the route by the least experienced walker in the group rather than by the modest map distance. Hikers who are unsure about the less obvious final approach may prefer a guided outing or another clearly marked Encamp route.

Estany Moreno's appeal is precisely that it does not feel heavily developed. The lake rewards visitors who enjoy the process of reaching a mountain objective: forest, water, changing terrain and a gradual opening of views toward the Ensagents cirque. Treat it as an Encamp hiking destination, start early, allow more time than the map distance suggests and turn back if navigation or weather becomes uncertain. With that approach, the lake offers a compact but substantial introduction to the quieter high country above the Cortals d'Encamp.
